‘One Day at a Time’ Alum Justina Machado to Star in Amazon Pilot ‘Horror of Dolores Roach,’ Roxann Dawson to Direct
Amazon has given out a pilot order to the series adaptation of “The Horror of Dolores Roach,” with Justina Machado set to star in the title role.
The project, based on the podcast of the same name, was first announced as being in development at Amazon back in May. Along with Machado’s casting, Roxann Dawson has come onboard to direct the pilot and executive produce.
In the show, “Magic Hands” Dolores Roach (Machado) is released from prison after 16 years and returns to a severely-gentrified Washington Heights with $200 and the clothes on her back. Her boyfriend missing, her family long gone, her apartment now occupied by strangers, Dolores finds respite in the dilapidated storefront Empanada Loca around the corner, the only remnant of her former life.
“The Horror of Dolores Roach” was originally developed as a one-woman show by Aaron Mark with Daphne Rubin-Vega starring. Mark subsequently adapted it into the podcast with Rubin-Vega again starring. Mark wrote the pilot script and will executive produce along with Rubin-Vega and Dara Resnik. Jason Blum, Chris McCumber and Jeremy Gold of Blumhouse Television and Chris Giliberti and Justin McGoldrick of Spotify will also executive produce.
Machado is best known for starring in the reboot of “One Day at a Time” that originally aired on Netflix for three seasons before moving to Pop for its fourth and final season. Her other TV roles include “Jane the Virgin,” “Six Feet Under,” and “Queen of the South,” while she has also starred in films like “The Purge: Anarchy,” “All Together Now,” and “Pedro.”
She is repped by UTA, D2 Management, and Goodman Genow.
Dawson got her start directing television on “Star Trek: Voyager,” on which she also starred as chief engineer B’Elanna Torres. Since then, she has directed episodes of shows like “Bates Motel,” “House of Cards,” “This Is Us,” “The Morning Show,” and the upcoming apple series “Foundation.”
She is repped by Rain Management, UTA and Ziffren Brittenham.
Machado is the second “One Day at a Time” alum to land a project at Amazon in recent days. Last week it was reported that series co-creator and co-showrunner Gloria Calderón Kellett had received a series order fo the romantic comedy series “With Love,” which falls under her overall deal with the streamer.
