The Queen has graciously turned down an honour from The Oldie of the Year Awards because she ‘didn’t believe she met the relevant criteria’ to accept.
Her Majesty, 95, declined the award, saying that ‘you are only as old as you feel’ – before adding she hopes they find a more ‘worthy recipient.’
Gyles Brandreth, who is chairman of the awards, penned a letter to the monarch’s private secretary Sir Edward Young to ask if she would be willing to accept the Oldie of the Year award.
However, in a letter published in the magazine’s November issue, her assistant private secretary Tom Laing-Baker penned: ‘Her Majesty believes you are as old as you feel, as such The Queen does not believe she meets the relevant criteria to be able to accept and hopes you will find a more worthy recipient.’

This year’s Oldie awards took place at the Savoy Hotel in London on Tuesday afternoon and was attended by Her Majesty’s daughter-in-law, Camilla.
Putting on a stylish display, the Duchess of Cornwall wore a navy dress with white collar and cuff detail and black piping, and paired her ensemble with black tights and pumps.
The royal, who kept her makeup natural, was seen sporting her usual coiffed hairstyle – and completed her outfit with dangling pearl earrings.

Previous winners have included everyone from Oscar winners to Nobel laureates, from community care nurses to veteran athletes, from Sir John Major to Dame Olivia de Havilland and David Hockney.
Last year’s award went to Downtown singer Petula Clark, who has had a successful eight-decade career in showbusiness during the Blitz.
This year’s winners of the Oldie Awards 2021 include Delia Smith, Bob Harris, Barry Humphries, Margaret Seaman, Roger McGough, Dr Saroj Datta, Dr Mridul Kumar Datta and Sir Geoff Hurst.
It comes after a busy few weeks for the Queen – the nation’s longest reigning monarch – who held a video call with the new Governor-General of New Zealand, Dame Cindy Kiro, on Monday.

On Saturday, the Queen looked in great spirits in a traditional blue ensemble as she arrived at Ascot racecourse to enjoy the QIPCO British Champions Day.
Her Majesty’s outing came after she made a rare public intervention on the climate change crisis on Thursday, saying she is ‘irritated’ by people who ‘talk but don’t do’.
She made the pointed comment when attending the opening of the Welsh parliament in Cardiff, and was speaking with the Duchess of Cornwall and Elin Jones, the parliament’s presiding officer, when her remarks were picked up on the event’s live stream.
At recent engagements, the Queen has used a walking stick, but over the weekend she left it with an aide who was walking closely behind her.
