Reviewed: That Boutique-y Gin Company Craft Cocktails in a can

LOOKING for a fancy gift idea to accompany the scorching summer temperatures? It could be worth checking out That Boutique-y Gin Company’s range of Craft Cocktails in a can.

On one warm afternoon, we decided it was very necessary to sacrifice a portion of our day to thoroughly test the fancy beverages; here’s how we found them.

That Boutique-y Gin Company specialise in, you guessed it, craft ale.

Just kidding, it’s boutique gin. The sort that comes in a variety of colourful flavours, like chocolate orange, strawberry and balsamico and Cucamelon.

And since TBGC has just released a range of cocktails in a can, we decided to give them whirl and see if they tasted as unusual as their name implied.

Now, if you go down to average supermarket, you can find a range of alcoholic tinnies for under two quid: think Mojito from Tesco, Malibu and pineapple from Asda and espresso martini from Sainsbury's.

But if you offer them as a present at a friend’s birthday, it might look a bit like you stopped off at a petrol station on your way over.

TBGC’s cocktails in a can, on the other hand, will set you back £12.49 for five if you buy them from Masters of Malt, but definitely look the part when they arrive.

The designs on the cans are eye-catching and definitely prove you’re not a total cheapskate.

Although, when it came to tasting them, we found the craft cocktails a bit of a mixed bag.

That Boutique-y Gin Company Gin And Tonic

  • Moonshot Gin with Citrus Tonic, £2.75 a can from Masters of Malt – buy here

We found the Moonshot Gin with Citrus Tonic to be a little stronger and sharper than normal.

7.2 per cent alcohol means you could get pretty drunk, pretty quickly on these.

Strawberry Gin Fizz

If you like cream soda, this might be the cocktail for you.

We found the strawberry taste a little subtle, though.

We also heard this one compared to children's toothpaste… each to their own.

Pineapple Gin Mule

  • Pineapple Gin Mule, £2.75 from Masters of Malt – buy here

The Pineapple Gin Mule was popular with our testers.

You could pick out all three major flavours and the combined to be an intriguing cocktail that goes down very easily.

Cherry Gin Cola

  • Cherry Gin Cola, £2.75 from Masters of Malt – buy now

We couldn't find anyone that liked the Cherry Gin Cola. We found it to be a bit too bitter to be pleasant.

An acquired taste, maybe.

Yuzu Gin Collins

  • Yuzu Gin Collins, £2.75 from Masters of Malt – buy here

If you like your cocktails to taste nothing like alcohol, the Yuzu Gin Collins is the one for you.

It's five per cent but tasted just like lemonade and you could quite comfortably knock a few of these down you before realising you're quite drunk.

The verdict

We thought these Craft Cocktails in a can were a neat novelty.

They'd go down well as a party gift and you could have a bit of fun playing roulette with the various flavours.

The Pineapple Gin Mule in particular is worth a second or third go, so it could be worth buying a handful of them for a cocktail connoisseur.

We wouldn't buy these to drink for ourselves; it's cheaper and easier to mix your own or buy the supermarket alternatives.

We'll worth a look as a gift though, especially if you're attending a BBQ.
