Samira Wiley on the significance of the ‘Handmaid’s Tale’ costume

Following the polarizing appointment of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh and the wave of abortion bans currently sweeping the United States, the red gowns and white bonnets worn by the women of “The Handmaid’s Tale” have never felt more eerily relevant.

But actress Samira Wiley, who plays Moira on the award-winning Hulu series that returned for Season 3 on Wednesday, recently told Page Six that she could’ve never predicted the now-iconic costume would grow to become a universal symbol of female oppression, worn at protests across the globe.

“At the show’s inception, when we first started, there was no way that we could all imagine the impact that it is having right now,” Wiley, 32, explained. “But to be able to see people dressed in handmaids’ costumes around this country, protesting, using it as a real force for change, it really makes you take a step back and realize the magnitude of a television show that you’re creating.”

Added the actress: “At the end of the day, it is a television show, but it’s also something that can elicit real change in people’s thoughts and actions. And that is powerful.”

New episodes of “The Handmaid’s Tale” premiere Wednesdays on Hulu.
