Sheffield United vs Liverpool betting preview

Thrashed 5-0 by fellow strugglers Burnley at the weekend, few would want to be in Sheffield United’s shoes on Wednesday when title-chasing Liverpool come to town.

While Oli McBurnie’s red card contributed on Saturday, the fact is the Blades were already well on their way to another heavy defeat by the time he was dismissed.

They can’t stop conceding and that’s a real worry ahead of the visit of one of Europe’s most-feared forward lines.

Mo Salah didn’t score or assist on Sunday but Liverpool still scored four as they continued their title push.

They needed all four though with Fulham causing them problems and the performance of stand-in keeper Caoimhin Kelleher will have been a cause for concern for Jurgen Klopp.

That will give the hosts some hope, as will the fact that Liverpool have won only two of seven away so far.

Still, it’s hard to see the Blades stopping the Red juggernaut given their current problems.

With Liverpool understandably short prices across the board, the betting value on this game may well be to head to the sub-markets.

We’ve got a 28/1 shot among our selections – read on to check them out in full.

Sheffield United vs Liverpool key stats

  • Everton lead the Premier League for tackles made this season.
  • The Toffees are also ranked third for shots taken from set-piece situations.
  • Everton once owned a dreadful record against Man Utd but since Sir Alex Ferguson departure, they’ve won four and drawn two of their 10 home league games against the Red Devils.
  • After scoring three times for United last month, Scott McTominay continued his impressive goalscoring form for Scotland last week, netting against Georgia.
  • Rasmus Hojlund is a major doubt for Manchester United, although they may well have Luke Shaw fit again at the back. Midfielder Amadou Onana is Everton’s big injury concern.

No cards (Spreadex)

The referee for this match is Simon Hooper and, boy, is he someone who will want to stay out of the spotlight.

It was his decision to call back play which caused a right storm at the end of the Man City v Spurs game at the weekend and so a quiet night would be most welcomed from his point of view.

Liverpool have consistently been one of the cleanest Premier League teams since Jurgen Klopp’s arrival and while that’s not the case with Sheffield United, lots of Liverpool games see a lower card/foul/tackle count as opponents often choose to sit deep and therefore make fewer challenges.

OK, it doesn’t take much for this bet to go wrong but there’s enough to like about odds of 28/1 to get involved.

Virgil van Dijk 1+ shot on target (bet365)

Only Luton have conceded more shots from set-piece situations that Sheffield United and this could be a tough night for the struggling Blades.

Van Dijk will be the main Liverpool threat from free kicks and corners, especially with Joel Matip ruled out, and he’s managed to land this in two of his last three starts.

⚽ Back van Dijk 1+ shot on target at 2/1 at bet365 ⚽

Anel Ahmedhodzic 1+ shot (Coral)

The Sheffield United defender has a fine, long-term record of landing this bet, having done so in 20 of his last 25 starts.

OK, Liverpool are one of the better opponents he’s faced during that run which stretches back to last season in the Championship, but the Bosnian has delivered against Man City and Newcastle already this term.

He’s a big aerial threat from set plays but also likes to try his luck from distance. Around even money looks more than fair.

⚽ Back Ahmedhodzic 1+ shot at 19/20 at Coral ⚽
