Shoppers divided over grey carpet that turned lilac in bizarre optical illusion – but what colour is it?

A shopper has been left scratching her head after believing she had picked up a grey rug for her bathroom only to discover it was a different colour altogether.

The woman was thrilled to snap up the bargain bathmats from ALDI for $9.99 in New Zealand (£4.89), but when her puzzled husband returned home and asked why his wife had bought lilac mats that didn't match the room.

She wrote in the Facebook group ALDI Mums that she was sure she had bought the light grey bath mat set but in natural lighting had turned a different colour, which led others to question the true colour or if it was an optical illusion.

"Please help… I swear I purchased a light grey bath mat set from Aldi today $9.99, got them home put them in the main bathroom, still looking a lovely light grey," the ALDI shopper wrote.

"Tonight my husband comes in and says why to I have purple bath mats in my bathroom…. checked it out and the dam things are now purple!!! I swear I purchased light grey bath mat set…. so can anyone clarify if I'm completely crazy or if these mats change colour in natural vs artificial light?!? P.S not happy at all with our definilty purple bath mats." [sic]

Many took to the comment section to debate the real colour, as one wrote: "Looks grey to me."

Another who had done the exact same wrote: "I got the same set, and yes it was definitely light grey in the store, but here it is against my light grey tiles."

"This is the blue/gold dress all over again. I see grey!!" joked one person referring to the infamous viral optical illusion.

"Have you got the receipt? What does it say? I’m so intrigued," asked one, while another added, "I don’t know how people can look at this and say it’s grey?"

"I went to buy the teal ones & my 19yr old daughter n I had a disagreement for a good 5mins about that mat as I said it was grey & she was adamant it was purple. So to see this makes me laugh…." added another.

One person reasoned: "Greys can have hues of other colours because I know when picking out colours (paint, leather lounge etc.) I something think that’s more of a blue/grey, cream/grey, mauve/grey, charcoal/grey, although they are all grey!! So maybe the tiles bring out the mauve colour of the grey bath mat against your lovely nice grey tiles, as they have different hues."

With so many people debating the true colour of the rugs ALDI confirmed to news.com.au that the specific rugs the shopper had purchased were likely to be a shade called 'lilac grey'.

Explaining that they were selling six versions of the rug, including two different shade of grey, the store said: "Our Microfibre 2 Piece Bath Mat Set was available in six different colours. Two of these colours were lilac grey and sliver grey.

"If a customer is unhappy their product, we encourage them to return the item to their local ALDI store."
