Sophie, Countess of Wessex Just Revealed Why Meghan Markle Had So Many Issues Adjusting to the Royal Family

Meghan, Duchess of Sussex did not have an easy time in the British royal family. From the moment her relationship with Prince Harry went public on Halloween 2016, the former actress’s privacy was a thing of the past. Not only did she deal with malicious attacks about her personality and character in the press, but she also had members of her own family reporting falsehoods about her.

Still, after marrying Prince Harry, Meghan did her best to uphold the standards and traditions of the royal family and Queen Elizabeth while adding her own modern flair. It did not work. As the duchess said during a candid interview in Harry and Meghan: An African Journey. “I never thought that this would be easy, but I thought it would be fair and that’s the part that’s really hard to reconcile,” she revealed.

Now following Megxit, one of the duchess’ closest royal confidantes, Sophie, Countess of Wessex is revealing why Meghan had so many issues adjusting to royal life.

Meghan Markle thought there was a conspiracy against her during her time in the royal family

Though she put a smile on her face and threw herself into her royal duties with endless events, speeches, talks, and tours, that was not enough for the U.K. press and public. As a result, when the Sussexes moved from their Kensington Palace apartment to their home, Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, Meghan retreated into herself.

“Meghan was convinced there was a conspiracy against her and so she basically put herself in isolation when they moved to Frogmore,” a source told royal expert Katie Nicholl for The Times. “She also felt like an outsider from the start, this wasn’t the life she was used to and she wanted out. One of the things Meghan struggled with was not earning an income. She has always worked and I think she felt unfulfilled. Having financial freedom was a big part of them wanting to leave.”

Though Meghan and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge were friendly, they never grew close. However, Meghan was close to Sophie, Prince Harry’s aunt by marriage.

“According to sources, the Queen has earmarked Sophie as a royal mentor for Meghan,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told Express. “The two spent time together at Royal Ascot last year and are understood to get along well. The pair share similar backgrounds, as Sophie, like Meghan, gave up a successful career (in PR) to marry into the Royal Family, so is in a position to help Meghan.”

The women grew closer since the Wessexes also live in Windsor and Meghan was able to have an ally and a listening ear when she was struggling most.

Sophie, Countess of Wessex revealed why Meghan Markle struggled to adjust to royal life

Since she was the royal Meghan was closest to, Sophie is now revealing why the duchess struggled when it came to adjusting to the royal family.  “I’d had five years to adjust,” she revealed to The Sunday Times about dating Prince Edward for years before marrying him in 1999. “For our six-month engagement, I was even staying in Buckingham Palace. Not that you necessarily know how it will pan out.”

Like Kate, who dated Prince William for nearly 10 years before tying the knot, Sophie knew exactly what royal life would be before committing to it. The Sussexes got engaged after just one year of dating, and married just seven months after that. Meghan had no time to see royal life for what it was, nor was she prepared for the underlying racism and sexism of the U.K.
