This is how to check if jeans, trousers and skirts will fit without trying them on

With the high street back open but shopping rooms closed it's a bit of a nightmare trying to work out what to buy and if it will fit.

Even in normal times, let's be honest, trying on clothes in changing rooms can be kind of annoying. Of course it's fun if you're having a mooch with friends on a Saturday afternoon, but no one likes taking armfuls of clothes into the fitting room and then finding out that nothing fits – aside from anything else, it can make us feel kind of rubbish about ourselves.

We've already shown you a few clever fashion hacks to try out, such as using your forearm length to see if a pair of jeans will fit your waist, or the span of your arm to check for length.

But we've discovered another brilliant hack that will help you check if jeans, or waisted trousers and skirts will fit, without having to try them on.

Your neck is around half the circumference of your waist and you can use this as a guide to help you check if jeans or waisted trousers or skirts will fit without having to try them on. In fact even if you have a fitted waist band on a dress you aren't too sure about, this simple measuring hack should work.

  • Two simple hacks to check if a pair of jeans will fit without trying them on

So here's how you try the simplest hack to see if your jeans will fit.

Take the pair of jeans or waisted skirt or trousers you wanted to try on.

Wrap the waistband around your neck. If the two ends touch one another then they should fit your waist.

See we told you it was easy. Of course this doesn't give you a definitive answer as to whether the item will suit you or not, it should help you decide whether they are worth trying on or the purchase in the first place.

Make sure when you try this hack that the two ends touch comfortably and that you're not strangling yourself to make the two ends meet as that would suggest that the jeans might be a bit too snug.

Equally remember you don't want the two ends to overlap as this means the waistband is probably too big.

And of course if you're using this hack on a pair of jeans, remember that jeans have a little bit of give in them, so they will stretch a little through wear.

We bet you're off to wrap your favourite pair of jeans round your neck now aren't you?
