Woman annoyed at her sister-in-law who stole her baby name
New mother reveals her sister-in-law stole the name she’d chosen for her baby boy after she announced it to family – and now thinks SHE is being ‘petty’ for refusing to pick a different one
- Woman, believed to be from America, took to Reddit after having son last month
- Picked name early in pregnancy and announced it with an embroidered blanket
- Sister-in-law gave birth and decided on the same name because she was first
A new mother has been left furious after her sister-in-law stole the name she’d already chosen for her son, and is bad-mouthing her to family members for refusing to change it.
Taking to Reddit’s Am I The A****** thread, the woman, who is believed to be American, said she decided on a name early on while pregnant with her son.
The couple had announced the baby’s name and sex in advance, posting a picture of a blanket embroidered with their son’s name to Facebook.
But a week later, her sister-in-law announced she’d just given birth – despite nobody knowing she was pregnant – and took the same name for her own son, saying she didn’t think it was a ‘big deal’.
The woman added that her husband’s sister is now angry at her for wanting to keep the name as planned, and has been sending critical messages to family members, calling her ‘nasty’.
Outraged users of the forum have called the other woman ‘delusional, petty and all-round terrible’ for her actions.
A woman has revealed her sister-in-law stole her baby name, and asks social media users if she is being unreasonable to be annoyed
Posting on the website, she penned: ‘I had my son a month ago. We had his name chosen early in my pregnancy.
‘It’s a double honor name which kind of came from a unique place. We had two people we wanted to honor, we didn’t go with direct names but names that tied to the people and we happened to truly love the names.
‘We announced the sex and the name in a Facebook post in April with a blanket that had his name embroidered on it.
‘Fast forward a week and my sister-in-law – my husband’s sister for clarity- who nobody knew was expecting, announces she has given birth to a son and the name she had chosen? The very same name we had chosen. It was awkward.’

The woman said that her in-laws were also shocked by the choice, but her husband’s sister said ‘she got to give birth first’ and loved the name so couldn’t see any issue.
She continued: ‘My husband thought she was nuts and told her she was a d*** for thinking she had “claimed” the name now. She said it wasn’t her fault she got there first.
‘I was like it’s fine, we are not changing the name and the cousins can share the same name. Well, she’s p***** that this actually happened.
Users were quick to back the new mother, adding that cousins often had the same names if they were passed down through families
‘She texted my husband about two days after our son was born asking him what our sons name is and he told her she knew, we had announced it.
‘Cue her texting every member of the family saying how awful we were to the kids and how we were petty and nasty and how I was an a****** for stealing the name after she used it.
‘Father-in-law told us to ignore her that it will settle down. But she is still p***** and said we’re only hurting the kids with this.
‘She has specifically called me the a****** because I was the one who said we would just keep the name as planned despite her using it.’
A few others were suspicious of the sister-in-law, who failed to disclose her pregnancy, and praised the woman for not backing down on her choice of name

A second wrote: ‘Is no one concerned that no one knew the woman was pregnant and she suddenly has a newborn and purposefully steals OP’s [original poster’s] baby name?
