CHELSEA held their nerve to reach the Europa League final but fans were stunned the referee bottled giving Cesar Azpilicueta a straight red card for a horror tackle.
The Blues captain went from hero to villain after he thought he had put his side ahead in extra-time before he missed a penalty in the 4-3 shootout win over Frankfurt.
The 29-year-old was adjudged to have fouled Kevin Trapp when he bundled the ball home before he was thwarted again by the German stopper following his spot-kick.
Azpilicueta was saved by the heroics of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Eden Hazard after 120 minutes of play had left the two sides level at 2-2 on aggregate.

MAURIZIO SARRI is fuming at having to fly his Chelsea side out to America to play a friendly next week – interrupting his plans for the Europa League final.
The Blues booked a date against London rivals Arsenal as they came through a penalty shoot-out to see of Eintracht Frankfurt in the semi-finals.
Chelsea boss Sarri would ideally want his squad to be given the chance to rest after their final Premier League match of the season against Leicester and the Europa final on May 29.
But instead the club's board have arranged for the side to play a first-team friendly against MLS team New England Revolution in Boston next week.
