  • DAVID DE GEA has been mocked for claiming his new £350,000-a-week Manchester United contract is with the “best club in England”.

Some fans argued United were “not even the biggest club in Manchester” and  clearly not the best team in the Premier League, after coming sixth behind champions City last term, their third finish outside the top five since 2014.

Spain keeper De Gea, 28, insists he is “very happy, very proud” to extend his eight-year stay at Old Trafford until 2023 – describing United supporters as “the best fans in the world”.

But he was taunted on social media as a “jokester” as United have not won the Prem since their all-time great manager Alex Ferguson bowed out with the crown in 2013.

Ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Ham, De Gea told Sky Sports: “It was a special week, signing my new contract.

“I’m very happy, very proud to stay at this club – the best club in England.

“We are in a special club with a lot of history, now it’s time to show everything – the passion, the pride.

“The fans are amazing. Even if we travel far away, it’s crazy, the support. The love we feel is amazing. The fans are for me the best in the world.

“It was a dream when I came here. I was a kid when I came, so now I’m becoming a man. Good moments, bad moments, everything.

“Really happy to have been here a long time… So hopefully the best things are coming.”

  • MANCHESTER UNITED are reportedly in talks with teenage starlet Angel Gomes about extending his contract as Barcelona monitor his situation.

The 19-year-old attacking midfielder – who joined the Red Devils’ academy when he was just six – is in the last year of his deal at Old Trafford.

United fans have raved about the performances of Gomes during his previous outings for the club, while he starred for the Premier League side during pre-season.

And he was finally rewarded with his first start in the 1-0 win against Astana in the Europa League on Thursday night.

According to the Manchester Evening News, United want to commit the England youth international down to a new contract at the Theatre of Dreams.

However they claim that they are not yet close to a breakthrough with the player’s representatives.

  • Manchester United have been put on red alert as Barcelona are looking to sell Samuel Umtiti and Ivan Rakitic, it has been claimed.

The Catalans are reportedly keen to offload the expensive pair in a bid to raise extra transfer funds.

Rakitic, 31, and Umtiti, 25 would both have been allowed to leave in the summer if the Catalan's valuations were met, according to the Mail.

And they would reportedly still be allowed to leave if the money was right.

  • MANCHESTER UNITED target Thomas Meunier has fuelled speculation he could be leaving Paris Saint-Germain after he admitted he is frustrated over his lack of playing time this season.

The 28-year-old right-back – who netted in the 3-0 win against Real Madrid in the Champions League – has featured in just two out of five Ligue 1 games this term.

And in an interview with French news outlet RMC.

He said: “My philosophy and mentality have never changed.

“I have been saying since my first steps here at PSG that I would be devoted to the club until the end of my contract or more.

“He [Thomas Tuchel] will be able to count on me.

“Sometimes it is a bit frustrating and the happiness in football is in playing.

“But choices have been made and the coach will take his own decisions.”
