15-year-old equestrian star Iona Sclater killed after falling off horse

One of the equestrian world’s rising teenage stars died in a horse riding accident at her home, officials said Monday.

British teen Iona Sclater, 15, an “exceptionally talented and dedicated” rider, was fatally injured when she fell off her steed Sunday morning in Cambridgeshire, British Eventing said in a statement.

“Our thoughts are with Iona’s friends and family, her dad Charles, mum Hetty and sisters Lara and Alicia, at this very difficult time,” the organization said.

The young equestrian amassed 33 top 10 results in five seasons of competing with British Eventing.

She represented the Eastern region four times, from 2016 to 2019, at the Under 18 Regional Team Championships, and won this year’s competition in June on her pony Foxtown Cufflynx.

Just five days ago, the fledgling star posted a picture on Instagram of herself and another horse, Swatchy, competing at the Frickley Park Horse Trials trials in South Yorkshire.

“Find me someone who looks at me the way Swatchy does,” she wrote.

Tributes from fans poured in on the post.

“To one of my biggest inspirations, thank you for everything, you were taken long before your time and for that i’m so sorry,” one person wrote.

Another added: “We all loved you so much and we are all thinking about you constantly. i wish you had all your time but we all know you would have continued doing amazing things.”
