PAUL SCHOLES believes Manchester United made a mistake in failing to sign a replacement striker for the departed Romelu Lukaku.
The Belgian left Old Trafford for Inter Milan in the summer leaving Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to shoulder the goal-scoring burden for the Red Devils.
Scholes told talkSPORT: “That’s the one thing that disappoints me.
“He (Solskjaer) obviously knew they were going to sell Lukaku at some point, but not to have a centre-forward lined up seems like a mistake to me.
“Whether they did, whether it dragged on too long from the club’s point of view, I don’t know.
“They’re going into a season without a centre-forward when it’s a club that is known for its attacking style and had probably four centre-forwards in its heyday.
“So to go in there with Rashford and Martial, who you’re not quite sure if they’re left-wingers or centre-forwards, we don’t know. But I’m sure it’ll get sorted.”
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has hailed the stunning Champions League display of teenage Norwegian prodigy Erling Haaland.
The 19-year-old struck a devastating hat-trick as he helped fire RB Salzburg to a 6-0 thrashing of Genk on Tuesday night.
Haaland's treble means he has started the season by scoring 14 goals in just ten matches, leading to a host of big clubs across Europe taking note.
And Solskjaer already has an inside track on the son of former Leeds and Manchester City star Alf-Inge Haaland.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of United's Europa League clash with Astana, Solskjaer said: “It was nice watching the game last night. But my focus obviously is on the game tomorrow.
“It's great watching him and I think everyone in Norway is excited by his development.”
GOOD news for United fans… Victor Lindelof has signed a new deal!
Since signing in 2017, the Swede has developed gradually and is now seen as a mainstay in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's defence.
On Wednesday, United confirmed 25-year-old Lindelof's new five-year deal.
Sun Sport revealed the offer of a new £150,000-a-week deal for the centre-back last week.

UNITED boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Fred will feature more as the season progresses.
The Brazilian midfielder featured in his first match of the campaign on Saturday after he came off the bench in the second half against Leicester at Old Trafford.
When asked whether Fred could start in the pre-match press conference, Solskjaer said: “You're picking my team here now, I might as well give it! Obviously, Fred came on and did well in the 20 minutes [against Leicester].
“We needed his legs and sharpness, and he's been patient, he's been working hard, he's not a young boy but he's still young in his English career and hopefully he will kick-start his season tomorrow. I'm sure we'll see more and more of Fred.”
OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has challenged Mason Greenwood to show why he rates him as one of the best finishers he has ever seen.
He said: “Mason's one of the best finishers I've seen and I've played with a few decent ones
“He's still very young but has matured in the last six months since I came in.
“I remember the kid who just wanted to play with his mates in the under 18s and now he's knocking on the door and ready to play in these games. I just don't want to put too much pressure on him.
“I want him him to go out there, enjoy himself, work hard and close down because when he has the ball at his feet I know he is going to score anyway and make the right finish.
“There'll be 11 Astana players living the dream tomorrow, one of the biggest games of their careeers but I want it to be a memorable one for our players as well.”
