Adam Gase’s first shot to prove Jets right will be ugly
LANDOVER, Md. — The Jets have not won two games in a row in 13 months. The Redskins have not scored a touchdown in 13 quarters.
Something has got to give.
The Jets (2-7) and Redskins (1-8) get together Sunday at FedEx Field for a matchup of two teams struggling to find their ways. The Jets are coming off a rare win last week over the Giants and are hoping to go on a late-season run to some respectability. The Redskins have an interim coach, a rookie quarterback making his second start and are one loss away from their third straight losing season.
This is a game for the diehards.
For the Jets, it is about trying to win consecutive games for the first time this season. They feel like they made strides last week against the Giants — the offense did not turn the ball over, they cut down on penalties and they mounted a second-half comeback after blowing their lead.
“It’s going to be a very important game, to see how we respond after a win,” running back Le’Veon Bell said. “The last time we won, against the Cowboys, we came back and played the Patriots and we played terrible. I don’t want that to be the same that we do this time. We played a good game [against the Giants], and we want to stack on another good game.
“The Redskins are in the same position as us — they want to find a way to win games. We don’t want to be their stat or the team to get them going in the right direction. We want to win this game and continue to move forward.’’
Quarterback Dwayne Haskins, the No. 15-overall pick in April’s draft, will make his second start for the Redskins. He has yet to throw a touchdown pass in his career, but he may be able to against a Jets cornerback group that is banged up and has inexperienced players in big roles.
Jets coach Adam Gase received a vote of confidence this week from CEO Christopher Johnson, but he knows a loss to the dismal Redskins won’t look good.
“We have won two games, so we should want that feeling again on Sunday,” Gase said. “The biggest thing that we talk about is just focusing on this week. What happened last week, you have to learn from it, but that doesn’t mean anything for you for the next week. All of your focus has to be on this game coming up. I always look at it as you win the last one, but you lose the next one, nobody cares. No one remembers the last one, so we just need to make sure that we stay focused on the task at hand.”
