Alastair Cook was not a natural England Test captain, but that doesn't mean he won't go down as one of the all-time greats

ON the face of it, Alastair Cook had few of the attributes required to be a great leader and captain.

He does not possess the ferocious, heart-on-the-sleeve passion of Nasser Hussain, the street wisdom of Michael Vaughan or talk with the conviction and fluency of Andrew Strauss.

Cook is not a tactical master in the style of Ray Illingworth and he can’t coax brilliance from team-mate with the psycho-analyst’s skill of Mike Brearley.
