Aspinall declares he to wants to ‘smash’ mate Smith in Grand Slam final

Nathan Aspinall defeated Luke Humphries to reach the Grand Slam of Darts final before declaring his friendship with Michael Smith will go out of the window – at least for a couple of hours.

After Smith ended Raymond van Barneveld’s shock run to the last four in Wolverhampton, Aspinall won by the same score in the second semi-final.

Like Smith, Aspinall stretched away in the closing stages to reach his second major final of the year, having gone all the way at the World Grand Prix, where he was beaten by Michael van Gerwen.

The Asp, who finished the match in style with a 121 checkout on the bull, is delighted to see his great mate in another final. However, the Stockport thrower says he has every intention of making it nine major final defeats in a row for Bully Boy.

“I’ve got my good mate, Smithy, in the final,” said Aspinall. “We’re really good pals. We did an exhibition before this [tournament] so we’ve been away for 12 days together.

“I love the guy to bits but I don’t tonight, I want to smash him. There’ll be a lot of emotion on stage. Me and Michael will be beating ourselves up left, right and centre.

“He’s one of the best players in the world without a doubt. How he's not won a major is beyond me. Unfortunately, even though I'm mates with him, I've got to keep that going tonight.

"I'm looking forward to it and I'm going to enjoy it. I can't wait."
