Darts has a new cult hero after Italy’s Massimo Dante and his remarkable moustache made a winning start at the World Cup.

Dante and Michele Turetta led their country to a landmark first win on the World Cup stage in the tournament opener as they fended off a late fightback from Switzerland to claim a 4-3 success.

But for most fans the real winner was Dante's incredible facial hair, with some comparing it to cartoon villain Dick Dastardly. Others want to see Italy go all the way to Sunday’s final, which would require a few incredible upsets against some of the biggest names in the sport.

“That tache needs to be in the final,” declared one. Another said: “Massimo Dante is Tom Hardy in Bronson.” A third demanded: “Give them the title.”

Another fan quipped: “Missed opportunity, should have twiddled it like Dick Dastardly to celebrate.”

A fifth added: “I love him, what a man!” A six said: “The more of Massimo Dante we see the better. Fantastic entertainment.”

Another fan mused: “Massimo Dante looks like he's grown that huge tache to avoid DRA [Darts Regulation Authority] fines for spitting out obscenities every time he throws a dart… and I adore it.”

The opening night of the revamped £450,000 tournament – now a doubles event all the way through – saw 12 group stage ties take place on Thursday, with Australia’s reigning champions among the nations to triumph, beating debutants Guyana.

Hosts Germany also opened their challenge with a whitewash win over Hong Kong, as Gabriel Clemens and Martin Schindler dispatched Man Lok Leung and Lok Yin Lee in four straight legs.

Danish debutant Benjamin Reus produced the performance of the opening night, boasting an astonishing individual average of 114.7 to stun 2021 runners-up Austria in Group F.

Reus also landed four 180s and conjured up a match-winning 116 finish as he and Vladimir Andersen condemned Mensur Suljovic and Rowby-John Rodriguez to a shock 4-2 defeat.
