Insight from the bookies: Market movers after start of Euro 2020 and reflecting on Ascot

WITH Euro 2020 in full swing and Ascot having one day remaining, it's been all hands on deck for the bookies.

BoyleSports' spokesman Lawrence Lyons is on hand with the market movers and the latest insight from the trade floor.

Euro 2020

One week into Euro 2020 and the bulk of the money since the tournament began is coming for Italy.

Roberto Mancini’s side came in for a lot of the late support before the first ball was kicked and went off 15/2 shots from 10/1 in the days before their Group A opener against Turkey.

Two consecutive 3-0 victories have only bolstered the late gamble and a growing number are latching on to their run of ten consecutive victories without conceding a single goal.

It’s a whopping 31 goals without reply now for the Italians and they have been the pick of the bunch so far with punters, forcing the move into 11/2 which leaves only one side ahead of them in the betting to go all the way.

The favourites’ tag still belongs to France, whose victory over Germany was enough to see them clipped into 10/3 from 9/2.

The top goalscorer race is unsurprisingly tight at this stage with a cluster of players on two goals.

Romelu Lukaku remains the joint 4/1 favourite alongside Cristiano Ronaldo despite drawing a blank against Denmark, while Italy’s Ciro Immobile, who found the net against both Turkey and Switzerland, is the biggest mover having fallen into 6/1 from 16/1 pre-tournament.

Horse Racing

It has been a tricky week for punters at Royal Ascot with only four favourites obliging over the first three days.

One who did manage to save their bacon to some extent was Love, who was one of the biggest losers of the week for the layers when winning the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday.

Last year’s 1,000 Guineas and Oaks heroine is now a second favourite for the Eclipse (4/1 from 8/1) and the King George (5/2 from 5/1), while a cut into 7/2 from 7/1 makes her the antepost favourite for October’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Favourite backers were offered some more respite on Thursday, but not before Mohaafeth survived a lengthy stewards enquiry before being declared the winner of the Hampton Court Stakes.

The Frankel colt has since shortened into 13/2 from 14/1 for the Eclipse at Sandown, while a King George victory back at Ascot next month is now a 12/1 shot from 20/1.
