Leicester’s Maddison ‘baffled’ as he slams VAR refs on Twitter for missing Nakamba handball in loss to Aston Villa – The Sun

JAMES MADDISON has taken to Twitter to state his unhappiness with how Aston Villa escaped conceding a penalty in Leicester's Carabao Cup exit.

The dramatic semi-final saw Brendan Rodgers' side dumped out thanks to a 93rd minute Trezeguet winner after being denied a first-half spot-kick.

While 1-0 down to Matt Targett's opener, Leicester carved an opening for Maddison and his shot cannoned off Marvelous Nakamba.

Replays showed the ball appear to hit the Zimbabwean's arm but VAR did not overturn Mike Dean's decision not to give a penalty.

That led to Maddison tweeting the clip on Wednesday evening, with the caption: "Fair play to Aston Villa for getting to the final and not making any excuses but how a Premier League referee watching this from multiple angles several times comes to the conclusion that this isn’t a penalty baffles me."

Brendan Rodgers described the incident as a "definite penalty" after the Foxes crashed out.

The FA rulebook states that a foul will be given if the defender "deliberately" commits a handball, which includes moving their arm "towards the ball".

Although there can be exceptions for those making their body "unnaturally bigger" if the ball comes from a player "who is close".

Whether that was true for Maddison's case, with there around a five-yard gap between the two players as he rifled in the shot, was for VAR officials to determine.

Leicester did equalise after the plea however, through Kelechi Iheanacho in the 72nd minute.

But the Premier League high flyers missed out on a trip to Wembley thanks to Villa's last-gasp strike.
