Man Utd set to release captain Ashley Young at end of season after emergence of Wan-Bissaka and Williams – The Sun
ASHLEY YOUNG is expected to leave Manchester United at the end of the season will his contract due to expire in the summer.
The Standard report that Young has yet to start talks with United over a new deal and expects to be released by the club at the end of the season.
Despite being club captain, Young is unlikely to be a regular next year with summer signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka cementing the right-back spot.
There will not be many chances at left-back either with Luke Shaw and youngster Brandon Williams providing adequate cover.
Young, 34, moved to Old Trafford in 2011 and signed a new one-year contract in February but it appears his time in Manchester is coming to an end.
During his United career, the former winger has won the Premier League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Community Shield and the Europa League.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be keen to free up some space in his United squad as he prepares for a couple of busy transfer windows.
Speaking about his plans week, the Norwegian said: “We’re looking to strengthen in many positions.
"If you look at our squad compared to others we’re getting there, but need two or three players to have a squad with enough numbers to rotate throughout a long season and we’ll see what we sign.”
There is expected to be more departures over the next 12 months as Solskjaer looks to build a side capable of challenging for titles again.
United will certainly need to add to their squad following a disappointing display during their 1-1 draw with Everton on Sunday.
The pressure is still on Solsljaer and that draw meant he now has a worse record than Jose Mourinho did at Old Trafford.
