"Nervous" Gerwyn Price leaves Jonny Clayton chuckling at World Cup of Darts
Gerwyn Price joked he was more “nervous” watching team-mate Jonny Clayton than playing himself at the World Cup of Darts.
The Welsh duo secured a 2-0 win over Netherlands in Frankfurt to reach the World Cup of Darts final on Sunday. They comfortably saw off Dirk van Duijvenbode and Danny Noppert, who had earlier beaten Northern Ireland 2-0.
Meanwhile, Wales registered the same scoreline against tournament hosts Germany. And Price and Clayton inched one step closer to securing a second World Cup title in three years for Wales, having triumphed in the 2020 final after knocking out rivals England.
World no.2 Price said: “I’m over the moon. I was under pressure in the first game and I felt it was tough but I get more nervous watching Jonny than I do playing so I’m glad he won.”
Clayton then joked: “I’ve got no nerves at all, you know what I mean,” before adding: “To get to the final is all we wanted and now it’s all to play for. If I can follow my skipper we’ll be alright.”
It set Wales up to face Australia after the Aussies reached the final for the first time in ten years. It came after Simon Whitlock destroyed James Wide to secure a complete victory over the top seeds.
When asked about their prospects for the final, Price said: “I know how well Jonny and I can play, hopefully it clicks in the final and we win it,” while Clayton added: “ [To win] would be fantastic for Wales and for two good pals on that stage.”
