Newcastle lead 1-0 after a disastrous first half for Liverpool at St James' Park.
First, Trent Alexander-Arnold picked up an early yellow for protesting and escaped a second soon after as he pulled Anthony Gordon to the ground.
Things got worse for Alexander-Arnold and the Reds as the full-back failed to hold on to a back pass by Mohamed Salah.
The ball went through the England international's feet and Gordon picked it up from the left to beat Alisson on 25 minutes.
Just two minutes and 40 seconds later, the Merseysiders' captain Virgil van Dijk was sent off with a straight red.
Referee deemed Van Dijk brought Alexander Isak down from behind just in front of the box from where the striker could have scored.
