Phil Mickelson almost misses tee-time for round after lightning strikes his hotel causing huge fire – The Sun

PHIL MICKELSON almost saw his chances of finishing in the BMW Championship go up in smoke… after his hotel was struck by lightning and caught fire.

The American veteran revealed how he almost missed his tee time when a blaze was started on the roof of his accommodation in Medinah.

Mickelson, who has won 44 PGA Tour events, confirmed he had made his way out of the hotel but was without his clubs and clothes that were left inside.

The 49-year-old was due to tee off at 10:52 local time and tweeted at 9:27: "How's this for crazy?

"My hotel was struck by lightning, I was on top floor, we were evacuated and the place is on fire.

"I can't get back into my room and may miss my tee time because I am without clubs and clothes."

Mickelson would keep his Twitter followers updated with the bizarre scenario and revealed that he was going to make his tee time by the skin of his teeth.

He added: "EMT's were awesome! I'm going to make it. Turns out my clubs acted as a fire retardant. Lucky me."

According to Sports Illustrated, Mickelson turned up with 30 minutes to spare in his flip flops.

After getting changed, he was rushed to the tee with barely a practice swing to begin his round.

Mickelson's sister, Tina, would brilliantly reply to the golfer and it appears he is braced to get an earful from his mother.

She replied: "Bro- you can't tweet this stuff until AFTER you call Mom to tell her you're ok.

"Just spoke with her. Btw… call he. She would like 'a word.'"
