PlayStation 5 games: List of upcoming titles for Sony’s PS5
Sony isn’t playing any games when it comes to its launch lineup.
The console will be home to many Esports titles, including the ever-popular “Madden” and “NBA 2K” franchises, along with “Fortnite,” “Rainbow Six” and potentially a new edition of “Call of Duty.”
On June 11, 26 games for the next-gen console were revealed, with many rumored or announced before that, including a new entry to the “Assassin’s Creed” series and more. Usually, console launches are light on content, and it takes developers a year or two to really get into gear when it comes to new console tech and abilities.
That said, don’t expect a lot of the “Esports-ready” games to be exactly “Esports-ready” at launch. While pro leagues and governing bodies will install some of the new console gen infrastructure in the coming year, don’t be surprised if those same leagues shy away from using consoles as bugs, glitches and the technology are figured out. After all, while the power and capabilities of the PS5 have been outlined, they haven’t been demonstrated yet.
There are definitely lots of high hopes entering the new era of gaming. Here’s what you need to know about Sony’s offerings this holiday season and beyond:
List of PlayStation 5 games
Over two dozen games were revealed for the PS5 during Sony’s June 11 event. While there’s no set release date on many of the 2020 games, most are expected to be launch titles for the PlayStation 5. List last updated on June 13, 2020:
Here are more details of the 26 games announced during the PlayStation 5 reveal:
‘Grand Theft Auto V’
PS5 owners will get an “expanded and enhanced” “GTA V” in 2021.
‘Spider-Man: Miles Morales’
Set for a holiday 2020 release, the trailer for “Spider-Man: Miles Morales,” the presumed sequel to “Spider-Man,” featured no Peter Parker.
‘Gran Turismo 7’
The famed racing series is making a return to PlayStation consoles.
‘Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart’
No release date, but a successor in the “Ratchet and Clank” series built specifically for the PS5.
‘Project Athia’
From Square Enix, “Project Athia” is a game exclusively designed for PS5. Looks to be a fantasy game of some sort.
‘Stray’
It looks to be a legitimate cat simulator. Set for release in 2021.
‘Returnal’
Set in space, a sci-fi thriller of some sort. No release date.
‘Sackboy: A Big Adventure’
Featuring Sackboy of “LittleBigPlanet” fame, it’s a 3D platformer/adventure game.
‘Destruction Allstars’
A game that looks like “Fortnite” and “Rocket League” had a baby. Not as cool as it sounds, though. No release date.
‘Kena: Bridge of Spirits’
Third-person animated action-adventure game from Ember Lab. No release date.
‘Goodbye Volcano High’
Releasing in 2021, an animated game that features anthropomorphic animals.
‘OddWorld: Soulstorm’
The latest installment in the “OddWorld” series. No release date revealed.
‘GhostWire: Tokyo’
A first-person supernatural action game set in Japan. Coming 2021.
‘Jett: The Far Shore’
Coming out during the 2020 holiday season, a space-based adventure game.
‘Godfall’
Third-person hack-and-slash from Gearbox, coming holiday 2020.
‘Solar Ash’
Coming 2021. Third-person fantasy game.
‘Hitman III’
From IOI, the third installment in the revived “Hitman” series. Coming January 2021.
‘Astro’s Playroom’
Third-person game. No release date.
‘Little Devil Inside’
No release date. Third-person action-advanture, stylized.
‘NBA 2K21’
Self-explanatory. Featuring Zion Williamson, the game is slated for a fall 2020 release.
‘Bugsnax’
Looks kind of like “Animal Crossing,” but not. All the animals are made of food. Holiday 2020 release.
‘Demon’s Souls’
Looks like a fresh update. No release date.
‘Deathloop’
The most extensive trailer of the show, features an assassin locked in a time loop vs. rival assassins.
‘Resident Evil VIII: Village’
Featuring a now-heel Chris Redfield. No release date.
‘Pragmata’
Looks eerily similar to “Death Stranding.” Coming 2022.
‘Horizon 2: Forbidden West’
Sequel to the wildly popular “Horizon: Zero Dawn.” No release date.
PS5 backwards compatibility
While there are no set details on the PS5’s backwards compatibility just yet, at Sony’s specs reveal in March, it appeared that PS4 games would be able to be played on the PS5. PS3 and PS2 games are likely not part of the equation, as Sony deemed it too pricey to include in its next-gen console.
