Racing shambles as 29 horses DISQUALIFIED after all being ridden by the same jockey | The Sun

AN UNBELIEVABLE racing shambles saw 29 horses all be disqualified – after being ridden by the same jockey.

The colossal mix-up was down to apprentice jockey Wiremu Pinn being given the wrong weight claim.

Rookie riders are allowed to take weight off – or 'claim' – their rides to give a more level playing field against seasoned pros.

An administrative gaffe meant Pinn, who races in Victoria, Australia, was wrongly allowed to take 3kg off when he should only have been allowed 2kg.

The error occurred in races between May 27 and June 12 this year and was picked up when stewards carried out an audit.

Pinn rode five winners during that time and 25 of the 29 horses earned money as a result of finishing in the top ten.

The placings for all the affected races will be amended and prize money redistributed as if the horse had not been in the race.

Prize money won by Pinn and the trainers and owners of the horses will not need to be repaid.

A statement from the Racing Victoria Board read: "We reached this position in consideration of all the circumstances, including that the error in miscalculating Pinn's claim was not attributable to him, nor the owners and trainers of the 29 horses who all acted in good faith in booking Pinn in the races in question.

Pinn's claim was calculated on his performance in races in New Zealand, before he moved to Australia.

The RV Board said 'imprecise' communication between the two bodies resulted in the massive error.

The statement added: "The stewards, having considered all the facts and the submissions received from connections, have determined to disqualify the 29 horses ridden by Pinn in Victorian races between 27 May 2023 and 12 June 2023.

"In accordance with AR 143 (13)(b), the stewards ultimately determined that the horses carried a weight that had been adjusted by an allowance that Pinn was not entitled to.

"In reaching their decision, the stewards considered that those horses who competed against the Pinn-ridden horse in each of the 29 races were at a disadvantage as a result of the incorrect claim.

"As a result, the owners, trainers and jockeys of horses who finished behind the disqualified starter, will be paid by RV the balance of any prize money owing based on the amended placings in the next prizemoney payment cycle."
