Reddit user finds potential clue for name that’ll replace Redskins
At least Keanu Reeves could end up liking the new nickname of Washington’s NFL team.
The former Redskins appear to strongly be considering becoming the Washington (or DC) Sentinels — the team name in Reeves’ 2000 football movie “The Replacements” — after a Reddit user discovered that the company which manages the website Redskins.com also recently registered for the domain name, DCSentinels.com. Coincidentally, the movie, which features Gene Hackman as the head coach, was loosely based on the 1987 Redskins replacement players.
The XFL appeared to have also considered adopting the Sentinels moniker, having trademarked the name in 2019, before opting on becoming the DC Defenders, then watching the league fold for a second time.
Sentinels was seen as a long shot to replace the team’s decades-old racial slur. The Red Wolves have gained popularity among fans online, but Arkansas State currently holds the trademark rights to the name and The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Tuesday that the university has not had any discussions with Washington about the name.
