What happened to Christian Eriksen and why did Denmark star collapse?

FOOTBALL fans were horrified to see Danish attacking midfielder Christian Eriksen collapse on the pitch in a Euro 2021 game against Finland.

Onlookers sobbed as the player was resuscitated live on air.

Why did Christian Eriksen collapse?

Christian Eriksen collapsed in the 43rd minute during Denmark's Euro 2021 opener with Finland.

The shocking scenes happened towards the end of the first half of the teams' opening match.

It's unclear what caused Eriksen to randomly collapse.

His distraught teammates formed a circle around the Inter Milan ace, with some in tears.

UEFA announced the Group B match was suspended due to a "medical emergency."

The midfielder's wife, Sabrina Kvist Jensen, was seen in tears and being consoled by Danish players after she rushed down to the pitch.

But it later went ahead with Eriksen waking up and personally instructing the teams to carry on. Finland ran out 1-0 winners.

What is Christian Eriksen's condition?

A UEFA Euro 2020 spokesman has tweeted that Eriksen was rushed to hospital and "has been stabilised".

The spokesman tweeted: "Following the medical emergency involving Denmark's player Christian Eriksen, a crisis meeting has taken place with both teams and match officials and further information will be communicated at 19:45 CET.

"The player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilized."

What did people say about Christian Eriksen collapsing?

There has been an outpouring of messages from wellwishers for Eriksen following this evening's distressing images.

"Praying for Christian Eriksen, his family and his teammates," wrote singer Nathan Sykes.

"No words. My thought and prayers go out to Christian Eriksen and his family. Get well soon my friend. @ChrisEriksen8," wrote Turkish footballer Nuri Şahin.

"We're thinking of Christian Eriksen, his family and @DBUfodbold tonight. Wishing you all the best in your recovery, Christian," tweeted Arsenal football club,

Tottenham football correspondent Alasdair Gold said: "Full credit to the medical staff, players and officials who all acted so quickly around Christian Eriksen amid the shock."

"Simon Kjaer making sure he was in the recovery position. The sight of the players standing and screening him as they knew what was going on is unforgettable."
