The much-loved One Show presenter joins five other stars ‑ presenter Fern Britton, actor Ben Miller, broadcaster Anita Rani, actress Catherine Tyldesley and presenter Radzi Chinyanganya ‑ who will all perform songs from famous West End shows. Brandreth, 73, will attempt Stanley Holloway’s version of I’m Getting Married in the Morning from the iconic film My Fair Lady.

“My wife Michele already said she will watch with the sound turned down. If people could hear how I sing there would be no audience on Boxing Night.”

Despite this the noted raconteur said the show was a positive thing to do: “It’s been the most exhilarating experience.”

He also praised West End performers as they cope during the pandemic: “The great thing about musical theatre is that you forget the horrors of the world.

“I think those in musical theatre are doing more good than any politicians at the moment.”

The performers will be judged by some top names of musical theatre; Elaine Paige OBE, Samantha Barks (Frozen, Les Miserables) and Trevor Dion Nicholas (Hamilton, Aladdin).

Ben Miller, performing Time Warp from The Rocky Horror Show, said: “To do something I’m not quite good at is great.”

Returning to host is John Barrowman, who will team up with Elaine, Samantha and Trevor, opening the show with a Greatest Showman medley.
