Angela Black viewers saw some heartbreaking scenes in the most recent episode of the ITV drama. Angela (played by Joanne Froggatt) was dealt a crushing blow as her attempt to escape her abusive husband Olivier (Michiel Huisman) was foiled. She had plotted to kill her husband with the help of the mysterious Ed Harrison (Samuel Adewunmi), but when things went wrong Angela was arrested and the police became convinced she was suffering a mental breakdown. In the most recent episode viewers saw her have a stay in a mental health unit. After she was released Angela attended court with Olivier, but it resulted in him gaining majority custody of their two sons. Now that Olivier will have more time with the kids, he could manipulate them to be afraid of their mother. Will he turn the children against Angela?

In the latest episode, Angela was left heartbroken when she found out she’ll only be able to see her sons for a limited amount of time.

“Four hours a week. How can they say I’m a danger to my own children?” She exclaimed in tears.

But, things could soon be about to get much worse for the mother of two, as her abusive husband becomes even more manipulative.

Michiel Huisman, who plays Olivier on the show, recently opened up about his character’s controlling personality.

Chatting to Express.co.uk and other press, the actor detailed why it was such a challenging role to take on.

He said: “Even when you’re playing a character who turns out to be a horrible guy like Olivier, I need to sympathise with this guy, I need to understand him.

“So, that was my challenge,” Michiel revealed.

Looking at the reasoning behind Olivier’s behaviour, Michiel highlighted the character’s desire “to control” everything.

He explained Olivier wants to be “in control of his life and in control of his wife especially.”

The actor also noted how his character wants to “uphold this perfect picture of success and a beautiful family” no matter what it takes.

“When he starts to lose that control, that is when the demon comes out and he lashes out,” Michiel said.

He continued: “What I really enjoyed about playing Olivier, is that I could very heavily try and lean into his charm.

“I thought that would be a great challenge, to play a character that is mean, controlling, possessive, gaslighting his wife.

“But at the same time, he seems so charming on the outside,” the actor explained.

Could Michiel’s comments about Olivier “gaslighting his wife” be a sign that he could soon begin to manipulate those around her too.

As a result of the most recent episode, Angela now has a very limited amount of time she’s allowed to see her children each week.

However, as it is clear Olivier wants full control and custody of their children, he could soon take things one step further.

Would he be willing to turn his sons against Angela, making them fearful of their own mother?

Angela Black airs Sundays at 9pm on ITV.
