Bridgerton's Nicola Coughlan reveals moment she discovered that major plot twist
***Warning: Major Bridgerton spoilers ahead***
Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has opened up about the moment she discovered her character Penelope’s major plot twist.
As the quiet-natured Featherington sister, Penelope was seen pining after Colin Bridgerton (played by Luke Newton) and spending her days with best friend Eloise (Claudia Jessie).
As a secret writer named Lady Whistledown started spilling the secrets of high society through means of a newsletter, Penelope joined Eloise in trying to figure out who was behind them.
But the season one finale revealed, at least just to the audience, the truth – that the unassuming Penelope was actually the Regency-era Gossip Girl the entire time.
Speaking to Variety about the plot twist, Nicola admitted that even she didn’t know about it for a while, auditioning for the role without reading the Julia Quinn novels the show was based on.
‘When I went for the first audition, I only had a couple of days to prepare; I didn’t have time to read the books or do anything like that,’ she said.
‘I just thought: “I’ll give this a go and if I get a second call, then I’ll read everything.”‘
‘But that didn’t happen, I just got the job,’ she laughed. ‘So then it was like: “I’d better read these books and figure out who this character is.”‘
Knowing the books had a devoted fanbase wasn’t lost on Nicola, who started a deep dive into the series by signing up to fan forums – where the truth was discovered for her.
‘When I saw it, I thought, “No, no, no, no, that can’t be right,” she said.
‘I kept re-reading it, because it didn’t make sense: [I’m] being given this amazing role in a Shondaland-Netflix show, and it’s that role. It’s quite mind-blowing.’
While season two hasn’t officially been given the go-ahead, the show has smashed records as 63million tuned in over the Christmas period to watch the raunchy series.
The show, produced by US TV legend Shonda Rhimes, has been praised for its diverse casting choices as well as its blunt sex scenes.
We have so many questions ready to be answered, so now we’re just waiting for the gossip from Netflix.
