Carol McGiffin sparks outrage as she refuses to give up seat for pregnant women
Carol McGiffin shocked Loose Women viewers on Friday after a debate on whether you should give up your reserved seat on public transport to pregnant women or the elderly.
The Loose Women panel were discussing the topic, which got rather heated after a pregnant woman posted a photo to social media of two elderly people sitting in her reserved seats on a train.
The photo showed her three children squished into two seats and the two elderly people sat in the other seats she had reserved – and they refused to move.
Since the photo was posted it has gone viral, and not only has it got people talking but it has received rather mixed views.
Carol decided to go off on a rant and said she wouldn’t give up her seat to anyone if she had reserved them.
The host even admitted that she has ‘got into fights with people over reserved seats’.
She raged: ‘They should have reserved their own. I am sorry but it would never happen on a plane.
‘There must have been other seats on that train for them to sit.’
When asked if Carol would give up her seat to a pregnant woman, she added: ‘I would say no. It’s not my fault you’re pregnant, I mean you’re pregnant, not ill.’
Carol’s opinion has left viewers divided on the controversial topic – and in true fashion, they have taken to Twitter to talk about it.
One viewer tweeted: ‘I absolutely would give up my seat for a pregnant woman because if they were to fall or anything happened to them or the baby I’d never forgive myself.’
Another added: ‘Pregnant women are pregnant, not ill. Boils my blood when people say this, especially as I’m 20 weeks into a difficult pregnancy and still throwing up all day every day.’
One said: ‘Yes a woman may choose to be pregnant but at the end of the day YOU can also choose to show a little kindness and offer her your seat.’
Another viewer raged ‘Pregnant people are not ill – correct! But they do go through a lot of anatomical and physiological changes that put them at risk of collapses. I believe pregnant women should be offered a seat on a train or bus if they fell over and injuries could occur.’
One fan pointed out: ‘What if the previous train was cancelled ?! All reserved seats out the window. Do we know the full story here?!’
Although some viewers have backed Carol. One said: ‘I’m with Carol here! I pay for and reserve my seat because even though it may look it…I’m not able to stand…so if you need a seat do the same.’
Another tweeted: ‘Why can’t a pregnant woman stand up? They aren’t dying!! Kick the kids off the seats and then sit down. Stupid to moan about it.’
Loose Women airs weekdays at 12.30pm on ITV.
