Charlie Chaplin’s daughter Josephine dead at 74 after star turns in Escape to the Sun and The Bay Boy | The Sun

CHARLIE Chaplin’s daughter, Josephine Hannah Chaplin, has died at the age of 74.

The family announced the death of the Escape to the Sun star on July 13 in Carnet Du Jour.


A funeral is expected to take place “in the intimacy of the family” in Paris, France, according to the English translation of the announcement.

It is unclear about the cause of death.

HER FAMOUS FAMILY

The Canterbury Tales actress is the sixth of 11 children fathered by silent movie icon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Josephine Hannah Chaplin was born in Santa Monica, California on March 1949, six years after her parents eloped in 1943.

The actress is the third of eight children from Charlie and his fourth wife, Oona O’Neill.

The Salinger actress is the daughter of Nobel Prize-winning playwright Eugene O’Neill.

Josephine managed the Chaplin office in Paris on behalf of her siblings over the years.

She sponsored a statue of her father in Waterville, Ireland, which is where her famous family vacationed often.

The Bay Boy star married Greek businessman Nikki Sistovaris from 1969 until their divorce in 1977.

She then lived with French actor Maurice Ronet until his 1983 death.

After marrying her second husband, archeologist Jean-Claude Gardin, the pair remained together until his death in 2013.

She is survived by her sisters, Victoria, Jane, and Annette; brothers Eugene and Christopher; and sons: Charly, Julien, and Arthur. 

MOVIE/TV ROLES

In 1952, Josephine appeared in the opening scene of Limelight, which was written, directed, and starred her legendary father.

In 1967, she appeared in another opening scene from her famous father’s works, A Countess From Hong Kong.

According to IMDB, her list of acting credits continues with film such as Nuits rouges and À l’ombre d’un été.

In 1988, she portrayed Hadley Richardson, the first wife of Ernest Hemingway, in a miniseries that co-starred Stacy Keach.

Her last role can be seenin the 1994 film, Ciudad Baja.

In July 2002, a new double-disc DVD of “Modern Times” was released by Warner Bros, according to The Los Angeles Times.

Warner unveiled newly restored transfers of Chaplin’s masterworks, including The Gold Rush, The Great Dictator, the last film he made in America, Limelight.

Josephine said: “We put in everything we had in the archives, so they would be the definitive DVDs.
