Coronation Street spoilers: Ed Bailey horrified as son James comes out as gay – after sleeping with Danny

CORONATION Street’s James Bailey finally comes out as gay to his father – after sleeping with Ed’s old mate Danny.

The young footballer – played by Nathan Graham – has been keeping his sexuality secret for months as he worries he will face prejudice as an openly gay, black player.

Corrie fans know that James has gone to desperate lengths to keep his sexuality a secret on the show.

James has however come out to his brother Michael and mother Aggie and felt a sense of relief afterwards.

But he’s keeping the secret from builder dad Ed as he worries how he’ll handle the news.

Viewers will remember that James spent a night with a man called Dan at the end of last year.

The footballer went to great lengths to find his phone when he realised he’d left it at Dan’s house – in an attempt to keep his one-night stand a secret.

In an upcoming episode, James confesses to Michael that he had a relationship with Ed’s mate, Danny.

James makes the most of an empty house and invites Danny back, leading him up the stairs.

But unbeknown to the pair, Ed returns home midway through their romp and is puzzled to hear a thump from upstairs.

Ed heads upstairs to investigate – is James’ secret out?

Later in the week, James finally plucks up the courage to tell Ed that he’s gay over breakfast.

Ed is shocked at the news but seems more bothered that Aggie and Michael already knew.

However, later Ed makes clear that he thinks Danny has corrupted James

James is left worrying that Ed won’t accept him.

Aggie tells him that Ed just has a lot of information to process and will come round to it.

Later at the Bistro, Ed apologises to Danny but says he’s fearful of the challenges James will face as a gay man in sport.

James is pleased when he gets a text from Danny asking to meet.

When Ed arrives home, James is pleasant to him and Aggie’s pleased.

Speaking about the storyline earlier this year, boss Iain MacLeod: “We wanted to look at homophobia in sport, and homophobia in football so that will be a component of the story but also we wanted to look at modern story about young gay man.

“So it won’t be your normal coming out story where we see James wrestling with his sexuality, we’re quite keen that he knows who he is, but has some apprehensiveness about telling his parents, and some apprehensiveness about his teammates finding out, that when we meet the character he’s on the cusp of bigger things football wise, and is also aware that despite the progress that we’ve made as a society, in lots of areas, homophobia on the terraces is fairly rampant.

“He’s scared about the reaction. But not because he's worried that his family will reject him."
