Corries Sam Robertson teases Sarah and Adam split with Lydia on the rampage

Coronation Street fans would be forgiven for a slight sense of deja vu in upcoming scenes, as Adam Barlow's marriage to Sarah Platt seems to be on the rocks once again.

Though the pair managed to get through Adam sleeping with Sarah's co-worker Carla Connor last year – and even Adam buying Sarah an oven for a birthday present – Lydia's latest evil scheme could put an end to their relationship for good.

With Lydia determined to split the pair up by pretending to have an affair with Adam, Sarah is left devastated by the pair allegedly sleeping together. And though Adam is determined to repair their romance, is it even possible?

Speaking to Daily Star and other press, actor Sam Robertson didn't quite think so.

He explained: "I’m shocked [by how easily Sarah believes Lydia] without a doubt. I think Adam is really hurt and surprised, and it sets the wheels in motion.

"Once those seeds of doubt are sown, then can they ever recover from it, you know? We’ll find out."

Opening up on Adam's romance with Sarah, he added: "He does love her, absolutely.

"In a lot of ways this whole storyline is a reflection of his past and his present. Because his past which he’s kind of regretful about now, has come back to haunt him and it’s causing problems in his present.

"He thought he’d moved on, thought he’d escaped his past where he didn’t really treat women with the greatest of respect – but now it’s coming back to really affect his present life."

The star went on: "I think he’s all sorts of confused about it, he feels like a changed man so he’s feeling a bit aggrieved that the past is never going to leave him.

"He’s also scared that the present is potentially going to be really badly wounded by that."

But does Sam think the pair can come through the other side? When asked, he simply responded: "You might have to ask Tina [O'Brien] that. I really don’t know.

"It’s actually a conversation that I would like to have with the writers and Tina and Iain [MacLeod] the producer. It’s a tricky one!"

The actor added of his storyline: "At first I was a little bit troubled by it – we did a storyline a year before when Adam has a fling with Carla and there was trouble with Adam and Sarah’s marriage then.

"I felt personally that so soon after that, can we do another story about Adam and Sarah having trouble again?

"It’s been tough for Tina [O'Brien] and I to do a lot of arguments. Tina and I have gone from working together having fun and having a lot of harmony with the material to suddenly being at each other's throats again."

And what about Lydia's Fatal Attraction-style scheme? Sam fumed: "I think ultimately it’s criminal what she’s doing and quite sadistic in some ways – she’s unhinged when it comes to this situation. He starts to fear for his safety.

"It’s a combination of not only feeling unsafe, but feeling, 'Am I losing my marbles here, am I actually in the wrong here?'

"When someone convinces you that you’re lying but you’re convinced you’re not lying about it, he’s in that state of confusion really. It gets on top of him."

Coronation Street airs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 7:30pm on ITV.
