David Harbour joins Black Widow cast as character name breaks hearts
David Harbour joined the cast of Black Widow at the Marvel panel during San Diego Comic Con – and his character name has hearts breaking already.
We were not prepared for all these emotions, guys.
The Stranger Things star looked right at home as he made things official after it was announced that he’d be joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
David, who plays Jim Hopper in Netflix‘s beloved fantasy series, joined fellow stars Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and O-T Fagbenle, alongside director Cate Shortland at the panel.
And no one is more excited than the man himself.
When asked if he was ‘excited to expand his fanbase in the Marvel universe,’ the 44-year-old went on to ask: ‘Who writes these questions?
‘That is the dumbest question,’ he declared before screaming: ‘Hell yes!’
We can’t blame him in the slightest.
As if that wasn’t enough to have Marvel die-hards’ emotions through the roof, it was also revealed that the star will be playing a character named Alexei.
In Stranger Things season four, a Russian character named Alexei met a bitter end after a reluctant friendship with Chief Hopper.
After the tragic scene, it’s understandable that the name hits a bit of a nerve.
‘David harbour auditioning for the role of alexei in black widow knowing DAMN well the irony of it,’ one fan pointed out.
Another added: ‘HOPPER AS ALEXEI IN BLACK WIDOW WHAT.’
David told fans of the character: ‘In the Cold War, there was a nuclear arms race and the Americans developed all these armaments, including Captain America.’
He added: ‘The Soviets retaliated by creating their own version, called the Red Guardian. But he’s somewhat different than Captain America.
‘He’s a very complicated guy, and that’s what I love about him…Alexei, he’s a tremendously flawed guy, and also has tremendous humour and tremendous heart.’
After Marvel announced the news of the Black Widow movie at Comic-Con in San Diego on Saturday, Scarlett teased some of the details we’ve all been dying to know about where Natasha Romanoff’s story will pick-up after the events of Avengers: Endgame earlier this year.
Scarlett, who is being paid a reported $15 million (£11.8 million) for the spin-off, said of the assassin: ‘I get to play Natasha as a fully realised woman and in all of her many facets.
‘I’m excited for fans to see the flawed side of her, what she perceives to be the flawed side of her, and I’m looking to wipe out some of that red in my ledger so you guys will be seeing more of that.’
