EastEnders fans fume as Christmas special episode faces schedule shake-up

EastEnders: Christmas storyline trailer

EastEnders fans are outraged after realising the Christmas episode won’t air until way past the BBC soap’s usual spot. This year’s episode has been on peoples’ minds since February this year when the soap aired a first-of-its-kind flash-forward clip to the big day.

Six of Walford’s women were seen in The Vic, horrified to discover an un-seen male body on the floor is dead. After months of speculation, viewers are close to finally finding out who dies on Christmas Day.

However, the BBC have shaken up its schedule and the hour-long episode won’t air until 9.45pm. They were also shocked to find there would be no Christmas Eve instalment, for the first time in almost two decades.

Taking to X, @UploadTV_ wrote: “#EastEnders Christmas special airing 9.45pm-10.45pm is an odd choice. There’s been so much build up to this episode just to shove it on so late seems like such a waste?”

@michellewilli83 added: “9.45pm is just ridiculous though the biggest storyline that’s been building all year most people will have given up for the day by that time, they need to lose something in that packed schedule and put eastenders on earlier.” (sic)

@Kev_Andrew agreed: “Possibly the biggest EastEnders Christmas in over a decade and the BBC shift it to almost 10pm?? Awful schedule all round to be honest.” (sic)

“Why do they always put Eastenders on so late? Is there post-watershed stuff in it? Christmas Day is often my earliest night of kip in the whole year, thought they’d need to bump it to 6pm for peak ratings,” @craiging619 penned.

@kerryannjust asked: “Sorry why is eastenders on so late? Bring back 5pm Christmas eastenders.” (sic)

@CHXN3L added: “I miss when the BBC would actually show Christmas films during Christmas Day, sigh. And, EastEnders at 21:45? why so late?”

@michellewilli83 commented: “Schedulers 9.45 on Christmas Day is way too late for an hour long episode you’re cramming too much into 1 day instead of spreading it out over 10 days or so think you need to reconsider and remove an item and put eastenders on earlier.” (sic)

The scene in question sees Sharon Watts (played by Letitia Dean), Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), Linda Carter (Kellie Bright), Kathy Beale (Gillian Taylforth), Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) gathered around a Christmassy Vic.

They’re staring at the floor in shock before Sharon leans down and announces: “He’s dead”.

Fans have been coming up with theories ever since, and with so many loose ends still to be tied up in the soap, anyone could be the right one.

EastEnders continues on Friday at 7.30pm on BBC One.
