Leyla (played by Roxy Shahidi) and Liam (Jonny McPherson) haven’t had the easiest time in Emmerdale since becoming an item earlier this year. However, their greatest test to date could be the arrival of newcomer to the ITV soap, Meena Jutla (Paige Sandhu), who seems to have worked her charm on a number of men in the village already. Following the events of Thursday night’s double-bill and in an effort to cement her relationship with the dishy doctor, could the businesswoman concoct a scheme to trap her other half into their romance together, whether he likes it or not?

To kickstart the drama on Thursday night, Leyla and her young apprentice Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) saw Liam and Meena arrive at The Hop to sign in for their team-building day.

Although the newcomer tried to stir the pot, the doctor assured his partner she had nothing to worry about as he was going to treat her to an “intimate” evening together.

However, later on in the first episode, Gabby witnessed her boss’ other half walking into The Woolpack with the village nurse.

They explained to the youngster their colleagues were called out to a medical emergency, so they’d spent the day together instead of blowing the whole activity day off.

With Meena making it clear she was flirting up a storm with her co-worker, Leyla’s apprentice saw this as the perfect opportunity to ruffle some feathers herself.

By the second episode of the night, the businesswoman learnt her partner had been enjoying himself with Meena, with Gabby being the one to confirm the news.

“If it was just the two of them, it’s not a work thing, is it?” Leyla asked the youngster, which fanned the flames even greater.

“Yeah, it didn’t look like a work thing at the end of it – they were working through the wine. But anyway, I’m sure you don’t want to hear about their day,” she told her boss.

This then set the motion in Leyla’s mind her partner was cheating on her, or least he could be taken advantage of by the newcomer.

Am I stale already?

Later on in the episode, the businesswoman was distracted from her work as she worried about what Liam was up to.

“Why didn’t he call me if no one else turned up? He used to take every opportunity for us to be together,” she said.

“Am I stale already?” she asked her apprentice, to which the youngster then tried to play devil’s advocate by explaining the doctor would never be swayed.

“No, Meena probably didn’t give him a chance. You know how polite Liam is,” she remarked, knowing full well she wanted to cause trouble for the pair herself.

“Clueless, more like. It took him ages to figure out I fancied him,” Leyla added, before rushing off to a work emergency of her own.

Next week’s episodes will see the drama intensify as Gabby’s meddling eventually sees the pair at breaking point with their relationship.

However, in a bid to ensure the doctor doesn’t leave her, will the businesswoman tell him she is pregnant without actually conceiving a child?

Over-the-moon at the fact he’s going to be a father, Liam could distance himself from Meena to show her he doesn’t want a romance with her.

Unfortunately, this would leave Leyla with greater problems on her hands as she would have to fall pregnant by some means.

If not, she could risk losing Liam for good as she knows he wouldn’t stay with her after finding out she was lying to him about something so important and precious.

It seems Meena isn’t one to back down from a challenge, however, so she could do her best to find out what the businesswoman is up to, unconvinced by the pregnancy.

Desperate to have her own romance with the doctor, could the newcomer be the one to expose her love rival’s lies?

Emmerdale continues Friday at 7pm on ITV.
