Good Morning Britain guest red-faced as phone interrupts drink spiking debate

A Good Morning Britain guest was left scrambling during a discussion about spiking as his phone kept ringing.

The ITV show was hosting a debate about the rise in spiking, with sick predators injecting unsuspecting victims as well as tampering with drinks in nightclubs.

Michael Kill from the Night Time Industries Association was hit by an awkward mishap during the discussion though, as someone tried to video call him as he was speaking.

Host Richard Madeley tried to ease his nerves, telling him: "Don't worry, we've all been there. We'll let that ring out…"

Michael ended the call and continued to answer Richard's question on what else potential victims can do to prevent the disgusting attacks.

But he was soon interrupted again, this time quickly ending the incoming call and carrying on as he had been.

Michael has been campaigning for the Home Office to open an inquiry into drink spiking.

He said: "The Home Office should launch a formal inquiry to examine the results of that pilot, and the lessons that can be applied to the industry and policing nationally.

"The scheme found that through having on-site testing available in the night time economy, data could be collected that would provide a more accurate picture."

Elsewhere in the segment, a woman called Gemma spoke to the show about an incident during which she'd been spiked.

However Richard caused major backlash with viewers who accused him of "victim-blaming" because of his questions.

He asked Gemma: "But had you been taking precautions?"

He went on: "Obviously, you're aware of the risk of drinks being spiked – had you been trying to protect your drink?

"Did you keep your hand over it, have you kept it with you – do you remember that?"

However as Gemma spoke, Susanna Reid told her: "Honestly, it's not your responsibility to take precautions to stop someone who does maliciously put something in your drink."

She added: "I mean, how on earth anyone is expected to constantly watch a drink, I don't know – but Gemma it must have been completely upsetting for you."

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV
