Ellen Pompeo became a household name after landing her role as Meredith Grey on ABC’S Grey’s Anatomy in 2005. After months of speculations, the actress left fans devastated as she confirmed her exit following 19 seasons on the show,

Since Grey’s Anatomy first premiered, it has become the longest-running scripted primetime show and the longest-scripted primetime series carried by ABC.

The medical drama followed Meredith Grey (played by Ellen Pompeo), the daughter of the once-renowned surgeon Ellis Grey (Kate Burton), as she became an intern at the Seattle Grace Hospital.

Viewers quickly became loyal fans as they watched her career and personal life unfold in and around the hospital.

After much speculation Ellen could be leaving or starring in a limited capacity, the actress took to social media to confirm the dreaded rumours.

In the recent midseason finale entitled Thunderstruck, Meredith’s home tragically burned to the ground and all that was left was a post-it note she and her late husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) wrote their vows.

With her home gone, she decided to move to Boston after her daughter Zola (Aniela Gumbs) fell in love with a school there.

Jackson Avery (Jesse Williams) had also offered Meredith a job working on Alzheimer’s research.

She then announced her departure from Grey Sloan Hospital with an email and as she didn’t consult Nick Marsh (Scott Speedman), so he wasn’t sure where he stood.

Fans will have to tune in to the midseason premiere to see the fallout from her other friends and colleagues.

Grey’s Anatomy season 19 will return to ABC in the US on Thursday, February 23. A UK release date is yet to be announced.
