His Dark Materials season 2 ending explained: What happened at the end?

His Dark Materials: HBO announce return of second season

WARNING: This story contains spoilers for His Dark Materials season 2

His Dark Materials season two finished airing on BBC One on Sunday, December 20, and fans were left on the edge of their seats. The true identity of Lyra Belacqua (played by Dafne Keen) was revealed and Lyra once again realised she could not outrun her mother – Mrs Coulter (Ruth Wilson). Express.co.uk has provided a roundup of the final episode, and here’s what to expect from the next season.

What happened at the end of His Dark Materials season 2?

Lyra’s true identity was revealed

The final episode, titled Malice, started with Mrs Coulter in Cittàgazze as she was determined to track Lyra and Will Parry’s (Amir Wilson) movements.

Lee Scoresby (Lin-Manuel Miranda) and Will’s father, John Parry (Andrew Scott) had crash-landed in the alternate world and were trying to escape from the soldiers of the magisterium who were hot on their tail.

Not too far away, the witches continued to protect Lyra and Will and had agreed to help Will locate his father.

Things quickly took a turn for the worse when Mrs Coulter came across one of the witches in Cittàgazze, who revealed Lyra’s true identity as Eve – ‘The Mother of All’.

Coulter handed the witch over to the Spectres and the life was sucked out of her.

The angels joined forces with Asriel

Asriel (James McAvoy) made a short appearance in the final episode after it was revealed he needed the Subtle Knife in order to win the final battle.

The witches understood it was their role to conjure up an army to support Asriel in his ultimate fight against the magisterium.

He was also seen giving a speech to the mysterious angels, who had not been seen by viewers until this point.

When Asriel asked if the angels were with him or against him, they materialised in front of him and vowed to stand alongside him.

Fans are likely to see more of Asriel in the next season if it is renewed by the BBC.

Lee Scoresby died

Fans were distraught to see Lee and his daemon Hester (Cristela Alonzo) sacrifice themselves in order to let John Parry continue his journey.

They had been tracked down by the soldiers of the magisterium and he ended up being shot in the leg.

He offered to stay behind and fend off the rest of the soldiers so John could run ahead and find the bearer of the Subtle Knife.

Knowing he was dying, he called on the help of witch Serafina Pekkala (Ruta Gedmintas), but he died before she could reach him.

She was seen performing a spell on him when she arrived, so there is a possibility she is able to reincarnate him – fans will have to wait until the next season to see if he returns.

John Parry died

In one of the most heartbreaking moments of the season, John Parry finally caught up with his son Will, who had been trying to track him down since he was a child.

Their first meeting did not go down too well as Will was unable to understand why his father had not come home to his family.

John explained he had been stuck in the alternate world, but he had continued to think of Will and his mother every day.

During a heart-to-heart, John tried to encourage his son to embrace his new role as the bearer of the Subtle Knife, when he spotted a magisterium soldier approaching from behind.

In a shocking moment, John took the bullet to save his son’s life, and he died in Will’s arms. This would have been a frustrating moment for some fans, as John and Will had only just been reunited moments before.

Mrs Coulter took Lyra

While Will had been with his father, Mrs Coulter had managed to locate Lyra, and Lyra woke up from her sleep to see her mother kneeling beside her.

Before Lyra had a chance to say anything, the scene finished, and the next time fans saw Mrs Coulter she seemed to be on a train.

She opened a trunk in front of her, and Lyra and her daemon Pan (Kit Connor) were inside, sleeping.

Mrs Coulter was whispering to Lyra, telling her she was finally going to take her to a safe place.

There is a question as to whether Coulter had used some sort of magic to silence Lyra, as she did not wake up when her mother touched her face.

Elsewhere, the professor Mary Malone (Simone Kirby) was in the alternate world and she was still trying to figure out her role in the final battle.

She is likely to play a pivotal role in the next season as she is destined to protect Lyra and fight against the magisterium.
