The Last Kingdom is a much-loved drama series on Netflix, and sadly the show will be ending after the upcoming fifth season. The show is based on Cornwell’s The Saxon Stories, and his 13th book, titled War Lord, was published in October 2020. Fans are keen to know if season five will include storylines from the final book.
How will The Last Kingdom season 5 end?
The Last Kingdom fans were devastated to hear the series would be ending after the upcoming fifth instalment, which will hopefully air before the end of 2021.
Filming has just begun, and this series will be based on the ninth and 10th books from Cornwell’s collection – Warriors of the Storm and The Flame Bearer.
As this season will be the show’s last, fans have questioned whether the remaining three novels – War of the Wolf, Sword of Kings and War Lord, will be included.
At the end of April 2021, Netflix released the first set photos for the fifth season, but not much information has been given away so far.
Fans can look at the synopsis for each of the books to get insight into what to expect from the upcoming episodes.
Warriors of the Storm introduces a new character, Ragnall Ivarsson, who is Sigtryggr’s (Eysteinn Sigurðarson) brother.
He leads a group of Northmen and Irish to attack the Saxon kingdoms and Uhtred (Alexander Dreymon) is torn over how to respond.
Sigtryggr is married to his daughter Stiorra (Ruby Hartley), but he is also determined to defend his corner of Northumbria.
The attention also turns to Uhtred’s friend Finan (Mark Rowley) as he returns to Ireland to confront his brother over their difficult past.
Meanwhile, Stiorra goes head-to-head against Uhtred’s old friend Brida (Emily Cox) and gets her revenge.
In The Flame Bearer, Uhtred returns to his homeland of Bebbanburg again to claim back what is rightfully his.
He is defeated the first time, but later returns after a group of Northmen joined him in his plight.
Aethelhelm (Adrian Schiller) is one of the main antagonists in this book, as he is determined to see Uhtred fail.
Fans started to see his dark side in season four of The Last Kingdom, when he poisoned Lady Aelswith (Eliza Butterworth).
While no particular reason has been given as to why the series is ending, Uhtred actor Dreymon has spoken in the past about the difficulties of portraying an older character.
Uhtred would be in his late 50s by season five, and then in his 60s by the events of the final book.
With Dreymon only being 38-years-old, he felt it would be a challenge to make him look that much older.
Some fans have questioned why the series did not choose to recast someone older, but Dreymon has become such an iconic actor in the series.
In terms of whether the final season will cover events from the final three books, it is possible but unlikely.
Filming began a good few months after the final book was released, but there may not have been enough time for the creators of the series to use it in their scripts.
At this moment in time, it seems the series will come to an end following the events of The Flame Bearer.
This would seem like a reasonable place to stop, as Uhtred finally claims back his homeland of Bebbanburg once and for all.
If viewers wish to find out what happens beyond this, they will need to get their hands on the original source material.
The Last Kingdom is streaming on Netflix.
