Inside Emma Stone’s marriage
Emma Stone has found her happily ever after off-screen. In September 2020, Page Six confirmed that the Oscar-winning actor married comedian Dave McCary after nearly three years of dating. Despite starring as the leading lady in a string of commercially successful, critically-acclaimed and award-winning movies, Stone tends to avoid the limelight when she can help it, and her relationship with McCary is no exception. The newlyweds were first linked back in 2017, and have been spotted together sporadically since.
Stone previously had a highly publicized relationship with fellow actor Andrew Garfield, with whom she co-starred in The Amazing Spider-Man and The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While her recent nuptial news may disappoint hardcore Stonefield stans, Stone and McCary seem to be a happy, suitable couple. Stone’s previous romance with Garfield may have been the talk of Tinsel Town, but she keeps her relationship with McCary as low-key as can be. It takes some digging to find information about the private couple, but here’s the scoop.
Dave McCary stays behind the scenes
While Dave McCary is as active in Hollywood as his new spouse, he tends to stay behind the lens. He has taken on multiple behind-the-scenes roles in the realm of comedy, including writer, director, producer, and editor. He kick-started his career by founding sketch comedy group Good Neighbor with his longtime friends, current Saturday Night Live stars Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney. McCary also roamed the hallowed halls of 30 Rock as a writer and director for SNL from 2014 to 2019, earning multiple Emmy nominations. In 2017, he made his directorial debut with critically-acclaimed comedy movie Brigsby Bear. Most recently, McCary directed and executive produced Julio Torres’ HBO standup special My Favorite Shapes.
Like his comedy work, McCary’s personality gets rave reviews. “Dave has this core of kindness and sweetness,” a source told People in 2017. “He’s tall and fit, confident and funny… He’s just a great, cute, talented guy.” In 2019, another insider sang McCary’s praises to the magazine: “He’s very creative and funny, and he and Emma share the same sense of adventure.”
Emma Stone and Dave McCary laughed all the way to love
In recent years, Emma Stone has appeared in films that tackle topics ranging from racism in the South to sexism on the tennis court. Still, long-term fans will remember she built her career on her comedic chops, starring in popular comedies including Superbad, Easy A and Zombieland. Comedy is crucial for Stone: As a child, she took improvisational comedy classes to help her cope with crippling anxiety and panic attacks. “You have to be present in improv,” she told Rolling Stone, “and that’s the antithesis of anxiety.”
It makes sense, then, that Stone reportedly first met Dave McCary on the set of Saturday Night Live in December 2016. She starred in the sketch “Wells for Boys,” which he directed. The romance didn’t make headlines until October 2017, when a source told People the pair had been quietly dating for three months. In November 2017, they were spotted out and about in Manhattan with SNL‘s Kyle Mooney in tow.
Emma Stone and Dave McCary keep a low profile
Beyond their professional lives, Emma Stone and Dave McCary both like to lay low. Despite being part of the millennial generation, Stone does not have a public social media presence. “I think [social media] wouldn’t be a positive thing for me,” she told her pal Jennifer Lawrence in a feature for Elle magazine. “Anything that really bothers me that people could comment on is something I’m already worried about… [and] nobody really gives a shit at the end of the day except for me.”
Given her desire to keep her personal life personal, it makes sense that the A-lister would seek a partner who wasn’t in it for the celebrity. “He’s never wanted to be famous himself,” a source told People. “He’s wanted to showcase his funny friends and make work that lets him hang out with them. Even in party situations, he’s low-key and doesn’t crave attention and is okay bouncing and doing something more chill. I could definitely see how that would be appealing to someone like Emma.” While McCary may not be eager to schmooze at soirees on Stone’s arm, it may help that he understands the Hollywood scene from his own role in it.
Age 30 was the start of a new chapter for Emma Stone
Emma Stone made the most of her twenties: She starred in several critically and commercially successful movies, lived in New York City’s Greenwich Village, shared four years of love with Andrew Garfield, and topped it all off by nabbing the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance in La La Land. But as she approached the big 3-0, she began to seek some stability. “It’s weird how much turning 30 crystallizes your life,” she told Jennifer Lawrence in a conversation for Elle in 2018. “Instead of just living the dreams that I had in my youth and getting to do the job that I love to do and making friends and going through all of that… What do I actually want as an adult?”
“Here’s another turning-30 thing I’ve realized: You pick your family,” Stone continued. “You realize that your friendships, the people who go with you into these next phases of your life— you’re choosing your family.” She went on to share that her dreams are less about her work life nowadays, noting that, as a kid, she had zero interest in ever getting married or having children. Stone continued, “And then I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids.” Two years later, Stone’s first wish has come true… and it may not be long before her second one is granted.
Emma Stone shared her big news on social media
Despite Emma Stone’s distance from social media, Dave McCary announced the pair’s engagement in the most modern way: with an Instagram post. On Dec. 4, 2019, he shared an iPhone selfie of him and Stone flashing toothy grins and, in her case, a sparkling engagement ring. He captioned the post with a simple pink heart emoji. “The proposal wasn’t over-the-top by any means,” a source told Grazia, “but Dave was very romantic and had a beautiful speech prepared.”
Grazia also reported that the couple were likely to plan an eco-conscious ceremony. Stone is reportedly vegan and McCary is a vegetarian. “The big thing between the two of them is trying not to leave a massive carbon footprint,” an insider told the outlet. “They’re all about vacationing at eco-resorts, travelling by bikes and growing their own food, and that’s going to extend to their own wedding.” Since Stone is the face of Louis Vuitton, the outlet also speculated that the French luxury fashion house may design her wedding dress. As for the guest list? Based on Stone’s and McCary’s social circles, their wedding guest list would most likely include the likes of Jennifer Lawrence, Ryan Gosling, Adele, and members of the Saturday Night Live cast.
Pearls are an Emma Stone's best friend
How does one choose a precious stone for a precious Stone? Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but Dave McCary eschewed the traditional rock when choosing Emma Stone’s engagement ring. As a source told ET, he picked a ring with an untreated 8mm Akoya pearl in the center of a snowflake motif made of 0.37-carat diamonds sparkling on a solid 18k-gold band. McCary reportedly bought the ring, which was designed by Tokyo-based jewelry maestro Yoshinobu Kataoka, from hot New York City jewelry retailer Catbird, which advertises its wares as “responsibly made”—a fitting choice for the conscientious pair.
Stone may be an A-lister, but her engagement ring gets an A for affordability. Shortly after the engagement news broke, her ring remained on the market for $4,780, which is certainly more than chump change, but relatively accessible as far as celebrity engagement rings go. The unique ring seems a stellar choice for the down-to-Earth starlet.
The best-laid wedding plans went awry for Emma Stone
Emma Stone and Dave McCary planned to marry in mid-March 2020. However, March was the month when the coronavirus pandemic began to spread like wildfire in the United States. At that time, the CDC advised against large gatherings’ such as parties, funerals, and weddings, and like many spouses-to-be, Stone and McCary reportedly had to cancel their ceremony. At the time, an insider told Page Six that the couple had postponed their wedding without setting a new date.
Before their original plans came screeching to a halt, Stone and McCary had reportedly asked Jennifer Lawrence for advice on how to keep their wedding as private as possible. “[Lawrence] has shared lots of tips and tricks she used when it came to location hunting under aliases, getting venues through recommendations and skipping wait lists,” a source divulged to Grazia. Even with this effort, nothing keeps a wedding on the down-low quite like a stay-at-home order.
A switcheroo worked for Emma Stone and Dave McCary
Less than two months after reportedly cancelling her wedding ceremony, Emma Stone’s left ring finger suggested she had found a way to tie the knot after all. In May 2020, she appeared in a virtual chat with fellow actor Reese Witherspoon to discuss children’s mental health for the Child Mind Institute. The worthy cause got some extra publicity when fans and media outlets noticed the new, golden band on Stone’s wedding ring finger. “If you marry an anxious man, you’re going to have to know me the rest of my life,” psychiatrist Dr. Harold Koplewicz joked during the virtual chat, while Stone responded, “Thankfully, I didn’t do that.”
Four months later, in September 2020, the sound of wedding bells rang throughout the internet when photos surfaced of Stone and Dave McCary on a walk in Los Angeles. In the pictures, the couple are in face masks, casual duds… and matching gold wedding bands on their left ring fingers. That same month, Page Six confirmed the two were legally wed. A source told In Touch that the two had a “simple and perfect” ceremony and “plan on having a downsized wedding and reception for their friends and family once this is all over.”
It wasn’t the wedding they had in mind, but it sounds like Stone and McCary had a pearl-fect day. Cheers to the happy couple!
