ITV boss will be ‘gone in a matter of days’ after Phillip Schofield fall out

Phillip Schofield: Esther McVey questions This Morning’s future

During their GB News show on Saturday morning, Esther McVey said she believes it will be “a matter of days” before executives at ITV resign after Phillip Schofield admitted to having an affair with a colleague.

The former GMTV host compared the ongoing revelations to the now-defunct News of the World which was closed down after allegations of phone hacking.

“People could lose their jobs over this, from the Chief Executives right the way down,” Esther said to her co-host.

“So will we see heads rolling and will we see this show go?”

“I would say that it’s a matter of days now for the chief executive there and other people because they’re going to have to draw a line. They’re going to have to say this is definitive.”

Fellow presenter Philip went on to say it would be “difficult to see the chief executive of ITV seeing next week out.”

The discussion comes after the former This Morning presenter told the Daily Mail he’d had an affair behind his wife’s back with a young male co-worker.

He claimed that whilst the affair was “unwise” it “wasn’t illegal”.

As a result, Phillip released a statement explaining he had stepped away from his agency and ITV.

This means the 61-year-old will no longer present the British Soap Awards, which will air next month, or Dancing on Ice, which will return early next year.

He said: “It is with the most profound regret that after 35 years of being faultlessly managed by YMU I have agreed to step down from their representation with immediate effect.”

Whilst ITV initially accepted Phillip’s apology, they have since issued a statement claiming they knew nothing about the affair.

The broadcaster said it investigated rumours of an affair between Phillip and a young male co-worker three years ago, but said the presenter lied to them, his co-stars, and his agents at the time.

An ITV spokesperson said: “Further to our statement last night, ITV can confirm that when rumours of a relationship between Phillip Schofield and an employee of ITV first began to circulate in early 2020 ITV investigated.

“Both parties were questioned and both categorically and repeatedly denied the rumours as did Phillip’s then agency YMU.

“In addition, ITV spoke to a number of people who worked on This Morning and were not provided with and did not find, any evidence of a relationship beyond hearsay and rumour.

“Phillip’s statement yesterday reveals that he lied to people at ITV, from senior management to fellow presenters, to YMU, to the media and to others over this relationship.”

GB News airs weekdays from 6am.
