Kim Kardashian Mom-Shamed for First Photo of Baby Psalm: The Controversy Over Her Parenting Fail

Kim Kardashian’s fans were thrilled to see a photo of Psalm, her fourth child with Kanye West, when she finally shared the first baby photo. It didn’t take people long to find fault with the image, however, mom-shaming Kardashian for a serious parenting fail.

Kardashian and West welcomed baby Psalm

The couple welcomed baby Psalm earlier this month, with Kardashian initially not revealing too many details about their fourth child.

She tweeted the baby news, noting: “he’s here and he’sperfect!,” adding, “He’s also Chicago’s twin lol I’m sure he will change a lotbut now he looks just like her.”

The name was a bit of a mystery for some time, as well, with speculation about the couple choosing the name Bear or Teddy because of a teddy bear emoji that accompanied a baby shower post.

Kardashian shared photos from the party, writing: “We celebrated our baby boy about a week ago and now he’s here! He’s so perfect! Here are some pics of my CBD baby shower. I was freaking out for nothing because he is the most calm and chill of all of my babies so far and everyone loves him so much.”

Kardashian faced criticism over the first photo of Psalm

Psalm was born on May 9 via surrogate and, eight days later, Kardashian finally shared the first baby photo and revealed his name. She posted a screenshot of a text from West, where the proud dad wrote: “Beautiful Mother’s Day with the arrival of our fourth child. We are blessed beyond measure.” There was baby Psalm, sleeping peacefully in his crib, in the center of bedding and a crib bumper.

Some people were quick to comment on the major mistake the couple had made, which is completely unsafe, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics’ safe sleep recommendations to prevent sleep-related deaths, including sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

The AAP recommends that parents and caregivers “place the baby on his or her back on a firm sleep surface such as a crib or bassinet with a tight-fitting sheet.” Additionally, the AAP notes, “Avoid use of soft bedding, including crib bumpers, blankets, pillows and soft toys. The crib should be bare.”

One commenter, who shared they are an ER doctor, noted: “Please please please go pay an overpriced ‘sleep consultant’ to get all that unnecessary padding, bumpers, and blankets out of your child’s crib so they are not at risk for SIDS. I’ve tried and failed to resuscitate too many children that have died this way.”

Another commenter explained: “1. Congrats! 2. Anyone else freaking out about all the blankets & bumpers?! American Academy of Pediatrics recommends keeping the crib free of blankets & pillows until baby is 12 months old, as these can create a suffocation hazard. @kanyewest Just looking out for a fellow dad.”

The photo was staged and Kardashian is aware of the dangers

Kardashian removed the image from her Instagram account, but it’s still on her Twitter feed. While she didn’t respond to the criticism, a source told PEOPLE that she is “aware,” noting, “Kim is aware that she got negative comments about the photo of Psalm. It was a split-second, staged photo.”

The insider added, “As a mother of four, she very much knows how to keep her newborn safe in the crib. Again, it was staged for a photo.”
