'Married at First Sight': Amelia and Bennett Divorce, Breaking Fans' Hearts

Another Married at First Sight couple has called it quits. Fan-favorite pair Amelia and Bennett, who got married in season 11 of the Lifetime reality series, have divorced after one year of marriage.

‘MAFS’ stars Amelia and Bennett filed for divorce in October 2021

Amelia, a doctor, and Bennett, a playwright, said “I do” during Married at First Sight Season 11, which was set in New Orleans. At first, it seemed like the quirky couple was a perfect match. The two decided to stay together on Decision Day, and Bennett even got a tattoo of his wife’s name.

Unfortunately, it seems the honeymoon phase has come to an end for the Married at First Sight stars. They filed for divorce in Virginia on Oct. 14. A representative for the pair confirmed the split to E! News but did not provide additional details about what led to the breakup.

Amelia and Bennett’s split isn’t a surprise to some ‘Married at First Sight’ fans

Though many MAFS viewers were rooting for the eccentric couple, those who’ve followed them since the show aired probably aren’t surprised they are going their separate ways. Rumors began to circulate in the summer of 2021 that Amelia and Bennett’s marriage had come to an end. At the time, a MAFS fan account claimed to have received messages from alleged friends of the reality TV stars confirming the breakup.

After their Married at First Sight experience, Bennett followed Amelia to her native Virginia, where she was doing her medical residency. But at some point, it seems he returned to New Orleans, where he recently put on a play he wrote “about voyeurism and marriage,” according to his Instagram.

Fans were rooting for Amelia and Bennett

Amelia and Bennett’s split is a disappointment to fans who were hoping they’d be one of the rare MAFS couples who lasted. In a discussion about the divorce on Reddit, some said they seemed well suited to each other. But others pointed out that Amelia’s intense career and Bennett’s strong ties to New Orleans likely caused problems for the relationship. Some thought they were better as friends, not as a married couple.

There were also hints early on that Amelia was not totally committed to the Married at First Sight process. In a 2020 interview with Showbiz Cheat Sheet, she admitted that she decided to do the show as a lark.

“I was just looking for something interesting to do in the time I had off before starting my job,” she said. She added: “I didn’t particularly want to get married; I just thought it would be fun to be on a reality show! So I certainly did it for the wrong reasons, but it was a very, very interesting adventure, and I had a total blast.”

Bennett wasn’t planning on getting married either. He ended up on the show after a friend gave his name to the show’s casting director.

“I had no idea who this lady was or what she was calling about, but she was extremely charming,” he said in an interview with Reality TV With Bee. “We ended up talking for over an hour … By the end of the phone call, I had signed up for the process. It was complete happenstance.”
