NCIS: What was Ducky’s war crime secret in Broken Bird?

NCIS season 17 is in the middle of its midseason break and won’t be returning until the New Year. Over the years, we have gotten to know the NCIS team very well but every now and again we find out something new and unexpected. So what secret did we learn of Ducky’s (played by David McCallum) before his departure from the CBS show?

What was Ducky from NCIS’ war crime secret in Broken Bird?

Back in season six, a petty officer is murdered outside a hotel by his former fiancé and the team are sent out to the crime scene.

Despite initially believing the episode would revolve around the murder, the show only briefly focussed on the crime.

As Dr Donald “Ducky” Mallard and his then assistant Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen) looked closer at the body at the crime scene, a woman emerges from the crown, grabs the murder weapon and stabs Ducky in the hand before running off, leaving only her scarf behind.

Ducky is taken to hospital and is unable to tell the team anymore about the attacker as he is high on morphine.

Thankfully, Agents Ziva David (Cote de Pablo) and Tony Dinozzo (Michael Weatherly) manage to get hold of a video of the attack captured on a camera phone.

After translating the video, the team find out before the woman ran off, she yelled: “You killed my brother”.

The fingerprints on the scarf also match a woman called Mosuma Daoub (Naz Deravian), a florist who had been missing for a day.

When Gibbs (Mark Harmon) tells Ducky about what the woman said, the chief examiner doesn’t deny anything.

The team dig deeper into Ducky’s past and discover he was with the Royal Army Medical Core and ended up in Afghanistan at a refugee camp.

Agent Gibbs goes to Ducky to ask him more questions about what happened and he tells him about Mosuma’s brother Javid (Nick McDow).

He was tortured by one of his fellow doctors, someone he became known as Dr Pain (William Morgan Sheppard) and Ducky was in charge of stitching him up afterwards.

Meanwhile, Ziva and Tony find out Mosuma has gone to the Afghanistan Embassy to accuse Ducky of war crimes.

Riddled with guilt, Ducky goes to the embassy to hand himself in but luckily, Gibbs stops him before he does.

Abby Sciuto (Pauley Perrette) and Agent Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) mange to track down the torture doctor and gets him to meet with Ducky to talk over what happened with Mosuma also listening.

Dr Pain doesn’t deny he killed her brother and instead tries to justify what he did while it turns out, Ducky simply put him out of misery by giving him morphine.

On hearing this, Mosuma decides to drop the charges against Ducky.
