It’s likely both Roger (played by Richard Rankin) and his father-in-law Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) will be called upon to play a part in the war which played a huge role in American history. But while the duo prepare for battle, actor Richard has opened up on one of his character’s traits that he truly hates.

Speaking alongside his Outlander co-stars on a virtual panel at PaleyFest LA, Richard teased what’s to come and what he’s not looking forward to.

He was asked: “Is Roger ready for this Revolutionary War?”

“Oh absolutely yes! He couldn’t be more ready for the Revolutionary War,” Richard exclaimed.

“I just can’t wait to get out of the house to be honest, I’m desperate to get back on set.

“I truly can’t wait to get back on set, it will be lovely.”

However, he went on to admit: “Actually I have no idea what happens in book six because I haven’t read it so I think this will be the first time I go on not knowing anything.

“I will be excited not to wear a wig and a cap,” he continued, referencing his longer locks, which he has grown whilst in lockdown.

Showrunner Matthew B Roberts teased: “Thanks for growing your hair out.”

“Yeah you owe me,” Richard laughed as Sam Heughan chipped in: “That will save on the budget.”

The Roger MacKenzie star continued: “It’s difficult having long hair, it’s really truly difficult.

“I hate it, so bonus for me this season.”

While Richard is happy not to have to don a wig for his role of Roger next season, it seems Claire (Caitriona Balfe) could be losing his curly locks.

Teasing what’s in store for her character, Caitriona simply replied: “I am excited to see all my crew. I think we miss them all dearly.

“It is sad that everyone is not able to get up and go to work, and maybe I will get a haircut this season. I will let Sam do it.”

While this may seem like an odd spoiler – fans of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander novels know this could be a reference to a storyline which sees Claire fall dangerously ill.

In A Breath of Snow and Ashes, the sixth book the new series will be based on, Claire gets a bad bout of dysentery.

The medic is unable to treat herself or give advice on how she should be looked after.

A group of women will come to the Ridge to take care of her and one morning she will wake to find her head shaved.

She will be told it was to reduce her temperature and help with her recovery.

Whether this storyline will be included in the TV adaptation remains to be seen but it would certainly make for tense viewing.

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to watch on Amazon Prime Video now.
