Ozark fans had to wait two years for the release of its third season, so when it did finally arrive on Netflix, subscribers were thrilled to see the gritty series’ return to their screens. With all three series now available to watch on the streaming service, there have been questions surrounding the show’s future. So will there be a fourth season or has Ozark been cancelled?

WARNING: This article contains spoilers from Ozark season 3.

Ozark season three saw the introduction of two memorable characters: Ben Davis (played by Tom Pelphrey), Wendy Byrde’s (Laura Linney) brother and Omar Navarro (Felix Solis), the boss of the Navarro Cartel who they family has been laundering money for.

Up to the beginning of series three, Wendy and Marty (Jason Bateman) had not met Omar before and only dealt with people who worked for him.

But seeing as they were now a major part of his operation, Omar wanted to meet them in person and find out if he could really trust the Byrde family.

This led to a life-changing moment for Wendy and the demise of her brother Ben.

Ben, who suffers with bipolar, had moved to the Ozarks to spend more time with his family.

Throughout the series, he grew closer to his nephew Jonah Byrde (Skylar Gaertner) and had a romance with Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner).

But when he found out what his sister and her family had been up to with the cartel, he couldn’t help but shout out about it.

As he was no longer taking his bipolar medication, he became more erratic and him being so vocal threatened the lives of Wendy’s whole family.

So, to prove her loyalty as well as keep Ben quiet, she handed him over to the cartel for him to be murdered.

Wendy drove away in tears as Ben pleaded for her help, leaving fans shocked and emotional as they said goodbye to this new beloved character.

Has Ozark been cancelled by Netflix?

No, there has been no confirmation that Ozark has been cancelled by Netflix.

Netflix also declined to comment when approached by Express.co.uk about a renewal.

However, the show has not yet been renewed by the streaming service either so Ozark’s future is currently hanging in the balance.

The third series was released in March and so far, nothing has been said about a fourth series.

So, at the moment at least, Ozark has only got three seasons but this could change very soon.

Typically, Netflix announces if a show is going to be renewed or cancelled around one month after its release date.

This is so those at Netflix headquarters can work out the show’s popularity and if its subscribers would want to have another series.

Ozark season three was out on March 27 and so the delay in announcing the show’s future has been longer than normal.

But given the current worldwide circumstances, this isn’t a surprise as the makers of Ozark wouldn’t be able to start filming even if a fourth season was announced.

In the mean time, fans are just going to have to be patient and wait until Netflix reveals Ozark’s fate.

If there was a fourth season, going by the previous series’ release dates, it is likely it would be out sometime in mid-late 2021.

However, if the creators of Ozark have anything to do with it, there definitely would be more episodes to come.

Speaking to Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Chris Mundy said Ozark should run for five seasons if everything goes according to plan.

He said: “We’ve always talked about it as five seasons.

“It could be four, it could be seven…but that always seemed like a good number to us.”

Talking about whether he had a specific ending to the show in mind, Mundy added: “we’re building little things in, if we keep on track for the emotional ending we’re guessing we’ll have.”
