Penn Badgley just debunked major YOU season three fan theory
YOU star Penn Badgley has just shut down a popular fan theory about the identity of his next-door neighbour from the end of season two.
The second installment of the creepy Netflix show was released on Boxing Day and culminated with Joe Goldberg finding an unlucky new target to turn his attention to – despite still being in a relationship with pregnant Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti).
In the closing scenes he is seen walking out into their back garden, where he spots a neighbour in hers, sitting by the pool, reading a book, with a oversized hat obscuring her face.
His voice over says: "This is just the beginning, because this is where I had to be. Exactly where I had to be to meet you. There you were with your books and your sunshine. So close, but worlds away. I will figure out a way: a way to get to you. See you soon, neighbour."
Fans who had binged the whole series were quick to begin speculating on social media as to who this mysterious person could be.
Many decided that the neighbour was actually Joe's mother – a character who cropped up several times in flashbacks during the season, but whose fate remains unknown.
However Penn Badgley, who plays Joe, has just debunked this idea.
In an interview with Bustle, Badgley, who is also known for his role as Dan Humphrey on Gossip Girl, confirmed that the niehgbour is "definitely" not his mother.
He said: "She's definitely not his mom. I can say that."
The 33-year-old didn't provide any further clues about who it could be, but fans have a few more ideas up their sleeve.
Despite it being made very clear that Joe's ex-girlfriend, Beck did die at the end of the first season, there are still some who aren't convinced she isn't really gone and have pointed out how she too was an avid reader, like the woman by the pool.
Others have suggested that it could be one of Beck's relatives, such as her sister, Anya.
Beck also has a mother, step-mother and sister who are still out there and could want to get justice for her death.
One user thought that Dr Nicky's wife might also feature in the third season (if there is one, Netflix is yet to officially confirm this), to get revenge for her husband's wrongful conviction for Beck's murder.
However all this aside, it's also very likely the mystery woman might just be a brand new character we haven't met yet.
