Poldark season 5, episode 3 recap: What happened on Poldark this week?

BBC aired Poldark season five, episode three on Sunday (July 28) and the episode is streaming on iPlayer now. Poldark season five, episode three saw George Warleggen (played by Jack Farthing) sink deeper into madness while Demelza (Eleanor Tomlinson) dreamed up plans to start a school. Ross Poldark (Aidan Turner) faced yet more trouble in his mine after he staged a rescue following a tunnel collapse in the latest episode of Poldark series five.

What happened on Poldark this week?

The episode began with Ross telling Ned Despard (Vincent Regan) about his discovery of Ballantine’s body.

Though he cannot prove it, he thinks the death must have something to do with Ralph Hanson (Peter Sullivan), who has been causing more trouble in the area.

George continues to face problems of his own in Poldark season five, episode three, as his hallucinations get even worse.

He has been seeing his dead wife Elizabeth (Heida Reed) since episode one of season five and speaking to her since episode two, but in episode three he was also seeing images of Ross embracing Elizabeth.

WHAT HAPPENED TO ELIZABETH IN POLDARK?

This vision angers George so much that he fired a shot at the phantom Ross and Elizabeth, narrowly missing his uncle Cary Warleggen (Pip Torrens), who is trying his best to help his ailing nephew.

Throughout the episode, George is subjected to all manner of brutal ‘treatments’ to cure his madness, including leeches and plunges into ice water.

Unsurprisingly, these treatments are making George worse, leading to a suicide attempt as he tries to jump off a cliff.

Luckily, however, Dwight Enys (Luke Norris) is on hand to save him and could take over George’s treatment.

WHO IS IN THE CAST OF POLDARK SEASON 5?

In all this action, nobody in the Warleggen house seems to notice that Valentine (Woody Norman) has yet again wandered off, though luckily Ross and Demelza are able to bring him home.

Meanwhile, Elizabeth had some helping of her own to be doing after she discovers that the local children cannot read.

This leads her to start a school of sorts to encourage self-improvement and save themselves from a life down the mines.

Keeping the children out of the mines was particularly pertinent in Poldark season five, episode three as a rockfall in the mine led to 20 miners being trapped.

WHERE IS POLDARK FILMED AND SET?

After Cary refuses to allow a rescue and says he will close the mine, Ross and Ned begin a secret rescue that sees them save 14 miners.

Ned, however, nearly loses his own life in the rescue and is only saved by Ross performing a daring leap over a chasm.

Ned’s wife Kitty (Kerri McLean) also has a dramatic episode of her own after she encounters Ralph at a party.

She reveals that Ralph was not only a slave trader, but also implied he had a reputation for having sex with his teenage slaves – a fate Kitty avoided by marrying Ned.

Poldark season 5 airs on Sundays at 9pm on BBC One
